Stories of Stained Glass and Brass Bells

The following story appeared in the Utah Valley Magazine.

Several years ago, two BYU students watched as the old BY Academy building rotted away. Noticing the only piece of stained glass on the building was days away from being smashed out with the a rock, they decided to save it.

As the story goes, the two students broke into the building late one night and chiseled the glass from its frame. After graduation, one of those students boxed up the window in a crate and moved it with him to California. It's been stored in his garage for the past several years.

Recently, the stained glass was returned to its rightful place with the restoration of the entire Brigham Young Academy. Historians are unsure where the stained glass originated and what significance it had to the original builders.

The original bell wasn't as difficult to find as the stained glass piece. The bell that once sat atop BY Academy is now being used by BYU as the "victory bell" outside the Marriot Center. Thanks to a grant from the BYU Academy Foundation, a new brass bell (which is the same size and weight of the original bell and also has the same resounding tone of "C") has been created and installed in the restored bell tower.
