Brigham Young High School Class of 1913

This class is well documented in the 1913 "BYUtah" yearbook. The yearbook gives the Department of each student, but not their hometown. A new feature: In addition to Seniors, this yearbook gives names and some photos of the BYH Junior '14, Sophomore '15, and Freshman '16 classes. The yearbook information has been supplemented by research done by Scott Cowley, who in 2007 and 2008 painstakingly went through the handwritten annual records of BYH in the BYU Records Office. This information has now been added here. The current class roster totals 124 BYH graduates, plus one honorary class member: Alice Eliza Strong.

The following is a paraphrase from the H.S. 13's History in the yearbook:

At the annual spring class meet of 1911, we captured the coveted 'First Place' with a record of 32 points. The next year we took all track meets, and the baseball and basketball events. That was when we were three-year-olds. The following summer, July of 1912, came the glad news from Stockholm that Alma W. Richards, our '13-Star' athlete, had won the World's Championship [Olympics] high jump. As there was nothing higher than the World's Championships for our athletes to win, our class turned to the intellectual. Here, too, our success was phenomenal. The class gift from the H.S. '13s was the Beehive Fountain, designed by Andrew N. Brimhall. The following list is one of the most complete BYH class rosters.

Class of 1913. Albert Adams. Graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1913. Name on list, but no photo. Source: 1913 BYU Banyan yearbook, BYH section, pages 63-81. ~ ~ ~ ~ Albert Evan Adams was born January 26, 1895 in Parowan, Utah. His parents were Hugh Leech Adams and Juliette Cecilia Bayles. He married Verda Esplin on February 21, 1922 in St. George, Utah. They had two children. He died on November 10, 1969 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment, Parowan.

His parents were Joseph Adams and Elizabeth Ann Sugden Snyder. He died on July 7, 1974 in California. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.

University, Book 5, page 251. ~ ~ ~ ~ Hazel Louise Adams was born December 20, 1894 in Verdure, San Juan County, Utah. Her parents were George Albert Adams and Nancy Evelyn Mortenson. She married Joseph Baird on May 8, 1922, while living in Verdure. She died on July 16, 1980 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment, Crown Hill Cemetery, Denver, Colorado.

University, Book 3, page 464. Marian Lofdahl Andelin was born on May 21, 1891 in Provo, Utah. Her parents were Olof Wilhelm Andelin (BYA, BYH, BYU faculty member) and Mary Elizabeth Turner. She married Clyde Free Hansen in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 1, 1916 (div). She died on December 6, 1979 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. ~ ~ ~ ~ Several children of O. W. and Mary Andelin attended BYH, including Aubrey Olof Andelin (male), BYH Class of 1910; Marian Andelin (female), BYH Class of 1912; L'Etrenne Andelin (male), BYH Class of 1922 [born 1901]; [Thomas] Delece Andelin (male), also BYH Class of 1922 [born 1903].

Her parents were Robert Bodily and Harriet Ann Roberts. She married Charles LeRoy Richens on October 2, 1913 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She died on November 8, 1984.

Her parents were David J. Bonnett and Francis A. Cluff. She married Ernest Oliver Halverson, born on April 1, 1892 in "Dover, Sp, Ut" (sic). They married on October 10, 1914. His parents were Oliver Henry Halverson and Josephine Alveda Erickson. Muriel died on January 4, 1961.

University, Book 7, page 20. ~ ~ ~ ~ On April 27, 1913, The White and Blue student newspaper announced that the Class of 1913 had collectively decided to build a fountain as a gift to the school. A drafting class conducted a contest seeking a design for the new fountain, and the winner chosen was Andrew N. Brimhall, a member of the BYU Class of 1913 from Arizona. His design took a Book of Mormon theme by using Central American Aztec symbols. For the central symbol, he chose the beehive.

He married Lucile Hacking on August 29, 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died on September 9, 1959 in Vernal, Utah. Interment, Vernal Memorial Park.
