Virginia Kirsten Nicholes, born April 15, 1922 in St. George [BYH Class of 1940]; 6. Elizabeth Jeanne Nicholes (Blaine), born November 24, 1925 in St. George [BYH Class of 1944]; 7. Margaret Ann Nicholes (Otterstrom), born January 27, 1927; 8. Mary Joyce Nicholes (Woodbury) [BYH Class of 1949]; and 9. K. R. Kelly Nicholes [male]. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Ruth Nicholes Miller, age 87, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2006 surrounded by her family. Born on March 25, 1919, Ruth began life in Utah's "Dixie" (St. George) at the end of World War I, the fourth child in a large family of nine. In an autobiography, Ruth wrote that her "parents were educated, respected, talented people who were strong in their faith and totally devoted to each other, their family and the community." Ruth's father, Joseph Kelly Nicholes, was a former President of Dixie College and her mother, Olive Maiben Nicholes, was an accomplished author and painter. After the Nicholes family moved to Provo, she graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1937. Her father taught Chemistry at Brigham Young University. Ruth served a mission for the LDS Church in Germany in 1938. Ruth's mission was cut short with Hitler's invasion of Poland in 1939. She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and faithfully served in many positions. Upon her return to the United States from Germany, Ruth resumed her education, earning a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education at BYU, where she met the love of her life, Martin Miller. Ruth and Martin were married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 3, 1942. While Martin was a professor at BYU, Ruth became an elementary school teacher for Provo City School District, and later earned a Masters Degree in Library Science from BYU. Ruth taught elementary school and served as a librarian for over thirty years. She also enjoyed gardening and singing in choirs. Ruth's primary legacy is a devotion to education, not only of her own children, but all children. Even in her eighties, Ruth often commented that one of the greatest joys of her life was teaching children how to read, and helping them achieve the best within them. Ruth's beloved Martin predeceased her in 1980, although hardly a day went by without Ruth reminiscing how much she missed him. In 1981, Ruth wrote, "I know where he is and with whom. I have no regrets, just wonderful memories of all we have shared together." Ruth is survived by her three children: Lawrence Martin (Karen), Judith Evelyn McConkie (James), Max Alma (Linda), eleven grandchildren, and nineteen great grand children. She is also survived by three sisters, Virginia, Elizabeth and Joyce, and one brother, Kelly. Ruth's greatest desire was to bring joy to her family. Her wish for Christmas, 2006, was that she would be with all her family. The family wishes to express a heartfelt appreciation to Brighton Gardens of Salt Lake City, where Ruth lived the final six years of her life. Brighton Gardens gave Ruth continuous support, love, kindness and respect, for which she always expressed gratitude. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., December 23, 2006 at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City. Friends and family are invited to a viewing commencing at 9:00 a.m. at the mortuary. Graveside services will be held at East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery in Provo, Utah at approximately 1:30 p.m. on December 23, 2006.
