Class of 1950 ~ Honorary. Norman Darwin Spencer attended elementary and junior high school at the Brigham Young Elementary and Brigham Young Junior High School, before finishing his high school education elsewhere. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Mapleton, Utah: Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully September 24, 2009 in Provo, Utah at the age of 77 with his wife and family at his side. Norman was born May 11, 1932 in Salt Lake City to Savona and Mary Johnson Norman. His mother, Mary, died giving birth. Norman's Aunt and Uncle Josie and Vord Spencer later adopted him. Norman married his high school sweetheart, Colleen Nielsen, on January 4, 1952 in the Salt Lake City Temple for time and all eternity. Norman attended elementary and junior high school at the old Brigham Young Academy and went on to graduate from Provo High School where he met his sweetheart Colleen. Norman retired from the Provo Post Office in 1988 with over 30 years of service. He also worked several part time jobs to help support his family. Norman loved taking his family camping and enjoyed the outdoors. He loved technology and electronic gadgets, during his 77 years of life he went from wind up clocks to solar powered atomic watches and high speed internet. He taught his children to cultivate work ethics by laboring on their small farm. Norman dutifully fulfilled many church obligations throughout his life. Norman was preceded in death by his son Paul David Spencer (December 8, 1997). With loving memory he is survived by his wife Colleen and their four children: Michael Darwin (Pat), Steven Craig (Linda), Douglas Kay and Sherri Lynn Whiting (Paul); 23 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and a sister Jo-Ell Brienholt. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 11 a.m. in the Mapleton North Stake Center, 475 N 1600 W, Mapleton, Utah. Friends may call on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 82 W 400 N, Mapleton or Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery. Has filled all requirements for M.A. as a paper-hanger and calciminer. One who has worked his own way up and knows what he is going to do. A trusty friend and a loyal supporter of Church and State. Class of 1952. Delbert Sperry. Baseball, Tennis, Chorus. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Delbert Joy Sperry, 78, Husband, Father, Grandfather and Brother, passed away on November 27, 2012. He was born January 20, 1934 in Provo, Utah, the son of Dr. Sidney B. Sperry and Eva Lila Braithwaite Sperry. Delbert attended Provo City Schools and graduated from B.Y. High School in the Class of 1952, and subsequently from Brigham Young University. On May 22, 1964, he married his sweetheart, Anne-Julie Stangeland in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Delbert and Julie were married for 48 years. Delbert had a number of managerial jobs, including Manager, B.Y.U. Audio-Visual Center. He helped set up the Navajo Indian Tribe pre-school program, LDS Church Indian Social Worker, Utah County Welfare Supervisor, and the job that he loved the most, Utah's first Ambulance Coordinator with the Utah Department of Health, and the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. He set up a number of new ambulance services, including Springville and Spanish Fork. He loved working with the E.M.T.'s and paramedics, and had many very special friends throughout Utah. He retired in 1996, after 26 years with the State of Utah. Delbert was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served a mission to the Western States Mission from 1954-56. He was a ward financial clerk, teacher and home teacher, and loved his many church friends. Delbert wanted to give thanks to his special friends, Dr. Keith Hooker, Dr. Ronald Badger, and Dr. Richard K. Olsen who made it possible for Del to have those few years with his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Anne-Julie of Provo; his children: Anne (Steve) Kingsolver of Orem; Erika (Brad) Hatch of South Jordan; and seven beautiful grandchildren: Stephanie, Sarah, Brett, Brandon (serving in the Ventura California Mission), Amanda, Rachael and William. Sisters: Elaine Fish, of Las Vegas; Phyllis Bytendorp, St. George; Karen Grant, Salt Lake City; Brothers: Richard, Orem; and Brent of Salt Lake. Delbert is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Sidney B. and Eva Lila Sperry, and by his brothers, Lyman and Arlyn. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the LDS Chapel, 3050 Mohave Lane, Provo, Utah. Friends may call at the church from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to services. She married William Keeley Thornberry on June 17, 1922 in Vernal, Utah. He was born on July 4, 1893 in Stonefort, Saline County, Illinois. He died on December 22, 1970 in Glendale, California. His interment, Mound City, Pulaski County, Illinois. Claire Speirs Thornberry died on January 22, 1988 in Glendale, California. Her interment, Glendale, California. Claire is a sister of Vivian Speirs Hitchcock, also BYH Class of 1910.

Archie and Maud Spilsbury

BY Academy High School Commercial Class of 1900. Archie Spilsbury. He received a diploma from the Commercial program on May 31, 1900. Source: Deseret Evening News, June 2, 1900. In his teens Archie attended Brigham Young Academy. He met his future wife, Maud McArthur, a star athlete, at BYA. Maud, walking in Provo with a friend, saw Archie for the first time and whispered, "That's the man I'm going to marry." Eventually the couple met, and when Maud returned home, Archie drove to Mt. Pleasant to court her. After three months of marriage, Archie received a mission call to St. Louis, Missouri. In his absence, Maud gave birth to a baby boy, who was almost two years old when Archie returned. Cattle ranchers by trade, the Spilsburys moved from Toquerville to Cedar City so their four children could attend school.

Source: 1923 BYU Banyan yearbook, BYH section. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS WIFE'S OBITUARY: Orinna Rebecca Brady Spurrier, age 91, passed away at Orchard Rehabilitation Center in Orem, Utah, on Tuesday, July 27, 1999, incident to age. She was born March 9, 1908, in Fairview, the fourth child of Lindsey Anderson Brady III and Gunda Matilda Cruser Brady. She married Lester Kenneth Spurrier in the Salt Lake Temple on April 17, 1929. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, James Brady and Ted Brady, and a sister, Artie Pett. She moved from Fairview to the Tintic mining area when she was 5 years old. Her parents brought her up with the idea of being the best you could be and she succeeded in this endeavor. During her married life, she moved from Eureka to San Bernardino, Calif., and she and her husband worked for a mortuary there for several years. She also worked for the school system there and cooked in the schools and area camps in the summer. She was an excellent cook that all who knew her could attest to. She was an excellent mother, grandmother, aunt and sister to all the immediate family system of which was extremely large. Her acquaintances and friends were many. She graduated from Tintic High School in Eureka. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served many positions throughout her life in the different organizations of the church. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her two children, Carolyn Leavitt, and Burton Kenneth (Rose) Spurrier, both of Orem; a sister, Anna May Rostrum, of Salt Lake City. She had eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews. Source: 1922 BYU Banyan yearbook, BYH section. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Aleithea Stagg Wing, age 91, passed away peacefully Thursday evening of conditions related to Alzheimer's and age. She was born in Provo, Utah May 18, 1904, to David and Jenny (Jane) Goodman Stagg, the ninth child in a family of nine children. She attended grade school in Provo and graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1922. Aleithea and Norman Boley Wing were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on September 22, 1926. Aleithea graduated from Brigham Young University in 1950 with a degree in Elementary Education. In her early career she taught in the Provo School District and later in the Alpine School District in the Harrington and Greenwood Schools until her retirement in 1963. Students will remember her best from the "school picture" which accompanies this write-up. [Not available.] Before Alzheimer's took its toll she was very busy with church activities in the American Fork Second and later 27th Wards. She served as a temple worker and held many ward and stake positions. She was preceded in death by her husband on October 18, 1966. She is survived by son, Norman Stagg Wing, Richland Washington; daughter Janice Wing Rooney, Sandy; brother and sister-in-law, Niles and Lavon Wing, American Fork; seven grandsons, seven granddaughters and 27 great-grandchildren. A wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt and friend she is already missed by all that knew and loved her.
