Alberta & Robert Burrows
  • Work: 801-221-9331

Class of 1956. Alberta Jacobs [Margaret Alberta Jacobs]. Y'ld Cat Newspaper Co-Editor, Wildcat Yearbook Stick-Up Editor, Extemporaneous Speaking State, Extemporaneous Speaking Region, Childrens Theater, French Club, Quill & Scroll, Chess Club President, Thespians, Camera Club, Seminary Play, Senior Sluff Day Committee. Married Robert Burrows. Her parents are James L. Jacobs, and Margaret Swensen Jacobs (BYH Faculty). ~ ~ ~ ~ My dream while at BY High was to learn German and travel to Europe. I got my start in an informal lunchtime German class taught by Betty Jo Page in George Lewis’s room. (We performed a German version of Cinderella and went Christmas caroling.) Enchanted with the language, I dived into German classes at BYU, took my first trip to Germany the summer of 1957, and majored in German. After graduating from BYU, I studied at the University of Munich for a year (where I ran into Elder Weston Whatcott [also BYH Class of 1956], serving in my local ward). Afterwards I started graduate work at BYU, where I taught German four years part-time and six years full-time. To satisfy my wanderlust, I took groups of students to Germany during the summers. Finally finished my M.A., taught German and English for two years at Bountiful High, and in August of 1973 started a one-year teaching job at a German comprehensive high school in Berlin. In April of 1974 I met Robert Burrows, an electrical engineer from Ogden, who was working in Munich, and we were married six months later in the Swiss Temple. Returned to the U.S. in the summer of 1975 with a husband and bonus six children (Marc, Anne, Jeff, Jennifer, Craig, Brett) -- a fantastic package deal. Retired from teaching for a season to concentrate on parenting and other domestic endeavors. Lived in Ogden for two years, where our first two children (Margaret and David) were born, then moved on to San Jose, California. We ended up forty miles south of San Jose in rural Hollister (the earthquake capital of the world) where our third child (Richard) arrived, and Brent Brockbank [BYH Class of 1955] became our bishop. We renovated a sixty-year-old four-classroom schoolhouse on six and one-half acres, which became the home of our nine children. We had a huge vegetable garden, fruit trees, beef calves, rabbits, goats, and one eccentric chicken. A great life, but not exactly the espionage and intrigue I had envisioned for myself as a teenager at BYH. While in Hollister, I taught part-time in nearby Gilroy (the garlic capital of the world): German at Rucker Elementary school (two years), and ESL at Gavilan Community College (fifteen years). Retired in 2003 and moved to Orem the end of May, 2005, after having lived in California for more than twenty-eight years, plus a couple of years in Poughkeepsie, New York and Shelburne, Vermont. Our kids are scattered in Seattle; Los Angeles; Chico, California; Waldorf, Maryland; Guatemala City; Bountiful; Orem; and Provo. I love being back in Utah, living closer to siblings, uncle, aunts, cousins, and most of all more than fifty percent of our 23 grandchildren, reconnecting with friends from my former lives (BYH and BYU), and delighting in the spectacular view of Mount Timpanogos from my kitchen window. Favorite interests are family, reading, foreign movies, playing the recorder, and breathing in and out. @2007 ~ ~ ~ ~ Alternate email: aburrows@fastmail.fm @2010

Ruel Jacobsen

Class of 1924. The composite photo of the BYH Class of 1924 Fourth Year (seniors) includes a male student with only the surname Jacobsen. Source: 1924 BYU Banyan yearbook, BYH section. It is not obviously clear from other records which Jacobson this is. ~ ~ ~ ~ The most likely student is Ruel F. Jacobson, who is listed as a 2nd Year (sophomore) in 1923, is not mentioned in 1924, and is listed as a 3rd Year (junior) in 1925. Comparing names to other records we find a variety of spellings, for example, usually Ruel, less often, Reuel. Jacobsen is spelled Jacobson about as often as not. The following appears to be fairly accurate: Ruel F. Jacobsen, son of Peter Jacobsen and Johanna Larsen Jacobsen, was born May 3, 1908 in Fountain Green, Utah. Ruel married, and his wife is __________ Jacobsen. He had a sister, Dora Rowena Jacobsen Allred, and a brother, Virgil F. Jacobsen, Fountain Green. The Ruel F. Jacobsen family lived in Provo, Utah. He died on September 30, 1967. His interment, Provo City Cemetery, under the name "Jacobson, Reuel Frank". ~ ~ ~ ~ Another male Jacobsen student of the time was William LeRoy Jacobson, of Hinckley, Utah, who is listed as a BYU Freshman in 1925.

He married Cheryl. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: David Allred Jacobson was born September 16, 1939 in Provo, Utah to Reuel Frank Jacobson and Ina Allred Jacobson. Following a brief illness, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loving family on April 15, 2015. He was a gentle, kind soul; a man without guile, honest, loyal, loving, and a true patriarch to his family. He bore his testimony often to his grandchildren and they knew that he knew the Savior and the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. David grew up in Provo where he graduated from BY High School in the Class of 1957. He served an LDS mission in Norway and then returned to his studies at BYU where he met his eternal sweetheart, Cheryl Hunter. They were married July 11, 1963, in the Los Angeles LDS Temple. He also attended UVU (formerly UVTC) and served on the Institutional Council there. David and Cheryl are the parents of four children, 20 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. David grew up working on the family sheep ranch in Heber, Utah, and began herding sheep in the summers as a young teenager. When his father became ill, he left BYU to run the family sheep ranch, which he did for years. After he sold the sheep, he invested in income properties. David was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as scoutmaster for many years in four different wards. He loved his scouts and had a great impact in the lives of many young men. He also served in a bishopric, on two high councils, as an ordinance worker in the Provo Temple, and as a Sunday School teacher. He and his wife served an LDS mission together in Louisiana in 2002 -2003. This was a highlight of their lives and something they had always dreamed of doing together. He was keenly aware of the needs of others and through his service was a living example of his love for the Savior. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, skiing, boating, motorhome vacations and a good meal (with ketchup). All of these activities were enjoyed with his family building many happy memories. He and his sweet wife enjoyed traveling and seeing the world together. They especially loved spending time together in Grand Cayman. David was preceded in death by his parents and a dear brother-in-law, Leland Fillerup. He is survived by his wife of nearly fifty-two years, his children, Leland S. (Brenda) of Orem; Julie (Darren) Hougaard of Orem; David Keith (Lisa) of Cedar Hills; Heather (Anthony) Brock of South Jordan, his grandchildren and great-grand children, and his sisters, Reulene Fillerup (Paul) Smith of Chico, California; and Cosette (Cliff) Coreless of Spanish Fork, Utah. Funeral Services will be held Monday, April 20, 2015 at 11:00 a.m., at the Rock Canyon Ward Chapel, 3050 Mojave Lane, Provo, Utah. Family and friends may attend viewings held Sunday, April 19, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and prior to services Monday, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Interment will be at the Provo City Cemetery.
