Jensen [BYH Class of 1944] (Joan Ballif). ~ ~ ~ ~ He married Joan Ballif [BYH Class of 1944~H -- she also took classes at BYH, but finished up at Provo High]. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Dr. Darrell C. Jensen passed away peacefully at his home in San Marcos, California, on January 29, 2008. He happily celebrated his 82nd birthday on December 24 with his entire family and caregivers present. Darrell was born December 24, 1925 in Magna, Utah, the son of Dr. Carl and Lavona Rasmussen Jensen, and grew up in Provo, Utah. He married his high school sweetheart, Joan Ballif, in March of 1945 while serving in the Navy during World War II. After graduating from the University of Kansas City School of Dentistry in 1952, Darrell and his family moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah where he practiced general dentistry for 11 years. In 1963 the family moved to La Canada, California where he specialized in children's dentistry in Los Angeles for 25 years until his retirement in 1988. Darrell and Joan retired to San Marcos, California where they lived for the past 19 years. Darrell enjoyed and excelled at many sports and hobbies throughout his life. In school he played baseball and basketball. As an adult, he found his passion in golf and was the Charter President of the Alpine Country Club. While in San Marcos he golfed regularly for many years, earning a Hole In One twice. He was also an avid bicyclist before and during his retirement, riding almost daily. Darrell expressed his creative side in photography and sculpture, was a pilot and an archer. Most of all, he was a sweet, kind, playful, and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at 5 pm Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Palomar Estates West Clubhouse, 1930 W. San Marcos Blvd., San Marcos, California 92078. Darrell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan Ballif Jensen; his three children, Jan, Gregory, and Steven Jensen; their spouses, William Gregory, Traci Jensen, and Valerie Jensen; and five grandchildren: Alexandra Gregory, Vanessa, Blake, Kyle, and Cameron Jensen. Two sisters also survive him: Iola Anderson of Klamath Falls, Oregon and Beryl Smiley [BYH Class of 1947] of Salt Lake City, Utah. He was preceded in death by his brother Alva Jensen and sister Bonnie Jensen Shiner. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial donations be made to the College Bound Fund. Lee, died 1 July 1981 at her home in Salt Lake City. She would have celebrated her 84th birthday on July 2. Born in 1897 in Provo, Utah, Sister Lee attended Brigham Young High School, where she graduated in 1916. She received degrees in education and music from Brigham Young University, and did graduate work at the University of California at Berkeley, at Columbia University, and at the University of Utah. She taught school in Provo and Draper before being appointed supervisor of primary education for Jordan School District. On June 17, 1963 she married Elder Harold B. Lee, then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve. She was President Lee’s second wife, his first wife, Fern Tanner Lee, having died in 1962. Sister Lee was active in educational and civic organizations and held many positions in the Church, including member of the Primary General Board, the YWMIA General Board, the General Church Music Committee, and various stake Sunday School boards. She was honored as Woman of the Year in 1971 by the Associated Women Students of Ricks College and in 1972 by the Utah Woman’s Review. His parents were Francis Jensen and Jemima Dotson Jensen. ~ ~ ~ ~ On March 21, 1908, in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, Archie Burns, age 25, was arrested for killing James Fiske Jensen, the uncle of Garner Jensen [who then about 14 years of age]. Archie Burns had earlier whipped Garner Jensen, the nephew, [Garner Jensen was also the brother-in-law of Archie Burns -- Burns' wife's brother] and Jim Jensen had caused Archie Burns to be arrested for battery. This caused bad blood between the two. They met in a Mt. Pleasant saloon on Saturday, March 21, 1908, where Jim F. Jensen was shot and killed. The dead man was a brother of Lars Jensen of Scofield, president of the school board at the coal camp, and an employee of the Rio Grande Western for a number of years. Garner's mother was Nancy Jemima Dotson, who married Francis Jensen on June 28, 1892 in Minersville, Utah. She was born on November 19, 1868 in Cove Fort, Utah. She died on November 4, 1953 in Fresno, California. ~ ~ ~ ~ Garner James Jensen [known in his later years as James Garner Jensen], married Viola Allphin, daughter of George Kerry Allphin and Myra Asay Allphin. They were married on March 19, 1942, in Cardston, Alberta, Canada. Viola was born on March 16, 1908 in Lovell, Wyoming. She died on February 18, 1996. James Garner Jensen died on February 21, 1977 in Renton, King County, Washington. His interment, Mr. Pleasant, Utah.

Ida Olivia Jensen married Marion George Romney on September 12, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Marion George Romney was born on September 19, 1897 in Colonia Juarez, Chihauhua, Mexico. His parents were George Samuel Romney and Teressa Artemisa Redd Romney. Ida Jensen, a former teacher at Ricks College was working on a master's degree at BYU when she renewed an acquaintance with Marion G. Romney when studied at BYU for a year. Marion Romney and Ida Jensen were married on September 12th, 1924 in the Salt Lake Temple. The marriage was performed by Joseph Fielding Smith. After this Marion G. Romney began studying at the University of Utah. He received a bachelor's degree in political science and history in 1926. Romney then studied law at the University of Utah. He did not complete course work there. However he did pass the bar in 1929. Marion and Ida Romney had three children, of whom only one, George J. Romney, lived beyond the age of one. George J. lived to adulthood, served a mission, and in April 1983 read Marion Romney's general conference talk for him. The Romney's also had an adopted child, Richard Jensen Romney. Elder Marion G. Romney died on May 20, 1988 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ida Olivia Romney died on March 8, 1978 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Juli lived in Houston, Texas for eleven years, working as a chemist, then changed professions, working as sales manager for Hallett Materials for 23 years. She has a small hobby ranch populated with horses, dogs and cats in the piney woods about 50 miles north of Houston, Texas. A longtime Utah resident, except for temporary absences, he was especially proud to be a Jordan Beetdigger. Later he attended BYU High School, and after graduation [year of BYH graduation unknown] he enrolled in BYU, the only true university. Living in a perfect state for an outdoorsman, he became an expert skier and instructor. A great hunter, he especially enjoyed the hills at Gunnison. As a fisherman he could bring in the big ones anywhere. With golfing he had a love/hate relationship. He occasionally took up other interests, such as growing dahlias. A hard worker, Larry began setting pins at a bowling alley at age 16. He went on to the automotive field to manage a gas station in Lake Point. He later became a service manager for various dealerships and retired from the Larry Miller Group. Larry became a world traveler when his success earned him annual free trips to Europe. These tours ended in 2000 when Larry and Eva went on their first cruise. This became their favorite way to vacation. Their cruises to Alaska included fishing, and became a highlight. This year they enjoyed one last voyage to the Mexican Rivera. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Larry became a seventy and later a high priest. Larry held many positions, the last as Assistant Ward Clerk, first at the ward level and then at Cobble Creek Stake. An ordinance worker for many years, he began serving at Jordan River Temple, then at the Oquirrh Mountain Temple. Proceeded in death by his parents; brother, Lieutenant Colonel Jay R. Jensen, a former POW; and his sister, Lorna Spencer. Survived by his dear sister and friend, Carla; his children, Larry, Tammy (Will) Baker, Gary, Laurie and Stacy (Kevin) Knight, a stepson Steven, through his first wife, Jerry. She was born in Provo April 17, 1912, to Christen Jensen and Juliaetta Bateman Jensen. She attended the BYU Training School and Brigham Young High School, from which she graduated. In 1933, she graduated from BYU with a degree in English. At BYU she took a botany course and met a good-looking lab assistant named Bertrand Harrison, whom she married September 17, 1931, in the Salt Lake Temple. They were together 70 years before he passed away September 3, 2002. Four children were born to them: Bertrand Kent Harrison (Janyce) and Linnaea Harrison Lindstrom (Brent) of Provo, Leon Christen Harrison (Jackie) of Okinawa, Japan, and Philip Alan Harrison (Colleen) of Hyrum, Utah. They have 33 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren. A great-great-grandchild is on the way. Lorna was a fine pianist and performed publicly on many occasions, often in duets with other pianists. She was an excellent typist. In her teen years she won a typewriter for typing 15 minutes without a mistake. She often typed theses for BYU graduate students and was a typist for a short time in the Church Seminary and Institute Department. Her ties to BYU were very close. She taught at BYU for a few semesters. Her minor at BYU was Botany and she occasionally substituted for Bertrand in his classes. She was a member of the BYU Women and served as its president. She was also a member of the Fine Arts Club and the Alice Louise Reynolds Club, in both of which she served as president, and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She worked as a Pink Lady at the Utah Valley Hospital for several years. She was a member of the Provo Browning Society, which was founded by her mother. She was a member of the Provo City Shade Tree Commission for 20 years and served as its chair for the last eight of those. As a member of the State Commission, she was secretary and president and helped to get approval in the State Legislature for a bill protecting valuable trees. Lorna was always active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, filling such positions as organist, editor of the Provo 12th ward newsletter, ward Relief Society teacher and president and member of the stake board. In later years Lorna and Bertrand bought a camper and went to places such as the Oregon coast, which they loved. They went fishing on many of their outings. They loved to be with each other. Lorna is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grand-children. The family expresses thanks to all the friends who have provided care for Lorna and Bertrand in recent years, particularly the fine staff at the Courtyard at Jamestown Assisted Living Community. Her parents are Parley Arthur Jensen and Lillie May Keele Jensen. Mabel married John Chester Oliver on November 22, 1950 in St. George, Utah. Mabel Ethel Johnson Oliver died on October 8, 2005. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER HUSBAND'S OBITUARY: John Chester Oliver, 86, of Orem, Utah passed away January 2, 2000 at the Timpanogos Hospital in Orem, Utah of many health problems. Chester was born May 16, 1913 at Mountain Home, Utah to Paul Oliver and Mabel Burdick Oliver. He married Mabel Jensen on November 22, 1950 in the St. George Temple, St. George, Utah. He received his early education in Moab and Orem, Utah graduating from Lincoln High School in 1932 as an honor student. He excelled in debating, school plays and operas. Although he did not have any other formal education he was self taught in many fields, especially art, music, medicines, politics and sports. He was especially proud of his art collection, his home and garden, his trees and rose bushes. In 1968 Governor Calvin Rampton appointed him to work in the finance department at the State Capitol supervising the communications department and was re-appointed by Governor Scott Matheson to continue his duties. Governor Rampton appointed him to serve on the State Fine Arts Board, and he was asked to make the first inventory of art work at the capitol. Chester returned from the state job in 1978 and resumed working in his insurance business, Levin [Leavitt?] Insurance agency in Orem. He loved sports and sponsored many major league basketball and softball teams, who won many trophies that he was very proud of, he loved all the players. Chester did many community services such as promoting the Community Concert Series and the Utah Valley Opera. He and Dr. Jack Haynes organized the first Exchange Club in Provo, for which he received an award for getting the most members to join. He was a former member of the Orem Lion's Club and a present member of the Kiwanis Golden K Club of Orem. He was a member of the LDS Church. He loved his family dearly and was proud of his Italian heritage, and his beautiful cocker spaniel, Mandy. Survivors include his wife, Mabel, of Orem; two brothers and two sisters, LaVar (Carma) Oliver of Mapleton; Claude (Marie) Oliver of Provo; Betty Smith of Morgan; Elaine (Wayne) Hammett of Tucson, Arizona; Carol (Bruce) Bown of Orem; and a sister-in-law, Mamie Jensen of Provo. He is also survived by his faithful companion Mandy. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Paul and Frank (Gloria) Oliver; sisters, Rubye, Kathryn, and Thelma; and a sister-in-law, Allene Jensen. A special thanks to the staff at Timpanogos Hospital for their constant care, his wonderful doctors, Dr. David Flinders, Dr. Rodney Badger, pharmacists at Rite Aid and Dr. Robert D. Jones who helped him so very much during his illness. Funeral services were held Friday, January 7, 2000 in the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State St. in Orem. Interment, Provo City Cemetery.
