At the time of his death, Verl was a resident at the Seville Retirement Residence in Orem. His long and eventful life was an inspiration to family and friends, who will dearly miss his happy countenance and generous spirit. Verl was born on May 12, 1917, in Mammoth, a small mining town in Juab County, where his father worked as hoist engineer in the mine. He grew up in a large family of six boys and two girls during hard economic times that made it necessary for him to work to support himself from an early age. Verl graduated from Orem's Lincoln High School in 1935, along with his twin sister Venna. Enrolling at BYU, he eventually earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in Botany and Zoology, becoming the first member of his family to obtain a college education. During the war years, Verl worked in San Diego in an aircraft factory helping to build B-24 bombers and PBY-amphibian planes. He was a member of the Brigham Young University High School faculty from 1950 until its closing in 1968. In 1968, he was selected as Outstanding Biology Teacher by the National Association of Biology Teachers. That same year he joined the faculty of the General College at BYU. In 1971, he moved to the Department of Zoology, where he worked until his retirement in 1982. Verl married Lula Marchant in the Logan Temple in 1950. Together they served an LDS mission in Uruguay in 1953. Upon their return, Verl was called as bishop of the Provo Seventh Ward. Verl and Lula visited over 40 countries during their life's travels together. On two occasions, they moved their family to Africa for extended stays. In 1958-59, Verl was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, which took him and his family to West Africa. He taught at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science & Technology in Enugu, Nigeria. From 1965-67, Verl and his young family lived on the campus of the Mkushi International College in Zambia, where he had charge of the science curriculum. In 1973-74, he again took leave of his teaching responsibilities at BYU to spend a year in LDS-sponsored schools across Mexico, working with faculty at each school to improve instructional skills. Verl was a lifelong gardener, celebrated for his fruits and vegetables "especially his tomatoes" who once grafted ten different kinds of apples onto a single tree. At an early age, he taught himself to play the piano and became an accomplished musician. He excelled at dancing as well. He was also a founding member of his Oak Hills neighborhood organization; a skilled fisherman and outdoorsman, who worked for several summers as a ranger for the National Forest Service; and a landscape architect, who collected over a hundred boulders for landscaping projects during what he jokingly referred to as his "rock and roll years." He was affectionately known by generations of neighborhood children as "Uncle Bug." In retirement, Verl and Lula especially enjoyed researching family history and genealogy. He wrote two books on family history, one devoted to the "Thomas Allman Family History" and the other to his autobiography. Verl is survived by his brother, Samuel Allman, Jr., of Bountiful; many nieces and nephews; his two sons, Dwight D. Allman and Mark G. Allman; his daughters-in-law, Wendy and Kathy; and three grandchildren, Alissa, Anthony, and Sebastian. Funeral services were held Thursday, October 16, 2008, at the Oak Hills Sixth Ward Chapel, 1900 N. 1500 E., in Provo. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. [Provo Daily Herald, Tuesday, October 14, 2008.]

Urban & Amelia/Edna Allred

BY Academy High School Class of 1898, and Collegiate Class of 1900. Urban Allred, BY Academy Collegiate Class of 1900. I. Urban Allred received a Diploma: Bachelor of Pedagogy (B.Pd.) in 1900. Source 1: Deseret Evening News, June 2, 1900. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: J. Urban Allred was born in Lehi, Utah, on May 21, 1874, the eldest son of James Henry Allred and Catherine "Kate" Markland Jones Allred. Urban received his early education in Lehi, and later at Brigham Young Academy and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. During his school days at Brigham Young Academy, he kept a hand-written diary, one of the few such diaries to survive. He recorded several historic events, including the celebration of the BYA Founder's Day on October 16, 1895, and the events surrounding the ratification of Utah as the 45th state on January 4, 1896. He mentions many of the key individuals instrumental in the establishment and continuation of Brigham Young Academy. Urban graduated from BYA in the Class of 1898, and after two years of study at BYU, he received a degree as Bachelor of Pedagogy (B.Pd.) in 1900. Urban Allred filled a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Southern States Mission. He returned and taught school three years in Vernal, Utah and then 2 years in Lehi. He first married Amelia May Hammond on June 5, 1901 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Amelia was a loyal wife and companion, and a sustaining power backing their accomplishments; a woman of rare leadership who could make an attractive home out of a mere house on the bald-headed prairies. She was a beloved leader of the youth, the YWMIA of the Taylor Stake, she served as teacher and Stake board member, and was Stake President of that organization at the time of her death, on October 8, 1910. Amelia and Urban Allred were the parents of five children: Martha Jesina Allred Monson, Paul Hammond Allred, Urban Dilworth Allred, David Hammond Allred, and Kate Allred Whetten. In the summer of 1903, the couple went to Alberta, Canada, making their home in Raymond. They lived there for 34 years, during which time Brother Allred engaged in farming and livestock raising. He loved the soil and was tied close to it. In 1903, Urban Allred was called to establish the first Latter-day Saint Seminary in Alberta, and for 18 years was head of this religious instruction in Taylor Stake. Two years after the passing of his first wife, on June 26, 1912 in the Salt Lake Temple, he married Edna Bingham, daughter of Thomas Bingham and Elizabeth Gfroerer, pioneers of Ashley Valley in Vernal, Utah. Through Edna's patient persistence and labor of love she succeeded in brightening and in bringing sunshine, peace and happiness again to their household. She has performed a great work as mother and wife and her family has been given a happy home life, beyond which she has served in the Relief Society as officer and teacher. They were the parents of eight children: Ruth Allred Dallimore, Mary Allred, Lucile Allred Zenger, Odessa Allred Wood, Helen Allred Sweat, Hugh Bruce Allred, Eileen Allred Bell, and Miriam Allred. During a busy lifetime Urban responded to calls for three other missions, one in Minneapolis of the North Central States Mission in 1925, and two later in the Southern States, largely in the interests of family genealogy. Down the years he, with other members of the Allred family, assisted in compiling a large and well organized Allred family genealogy record. It was in the fall of 1937 that the Allred family moved from Alberta to Logan for the educational advantages of the Utah State Agricultural College [now Utah State University] and the Latter-day Saint Seminary system. After moving to Logan, Urban Allred continued his services in the Church. At the time of his passing he was teacher of the Adult Class in Sunday School, a position which he started in June 16, 1894, when he was set apart as a teacher and told that teaching was his special calling. He was named an officiator in the Logan Temple in 1938, a duty he faithfully performed to the last. Also surviving him were his widow, Edna Allred of Logan, the following brothers and one sister; Clarence Eugene Allred, Raymond, Alberta, Canada; Aaron Allred, Los Angeles, California; and Odessa Cullimore, of Provo, Utah; 34 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. James Urban Allred died suddenly June 25, 1956 at Logan, Utah. Link to his BYA School Diary.

She and Bob together served two LDS missions, the Dublin, Ireland Mission and in the Martin's Cove, Wyoming Mission. JoAnne possessed a great passion for service, she dedicated much of her time caring for individuals in assisted living centers, hospitals, ailing neighbors and above all for friends and family. Loye and Dick Nelson

Class of 1948. Loye Allred. Lincoln High School 1, 2. BYH 3. Her name is listed with the BYH senior class in the Senior Index in the 1948 Wildcat yearbook. Married Richard Nelson. (See Loye & her husband's photo on Class of 1949 reunion page for 2003.) ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Loye Allred Nelson, 87, peacefully returned home on the morning of Wednesday, September 27, 2017. She was born in Provo, Utah, to Raymond Bliss and Alta Booth Allred on July 3, 1930. Loye grew up on the Allred’s farm in Provo with her parents and two younger siblings, Rey and Janice. She attended Lincoln High, B.Y. High and Brigham Young University, graduating in elementary education. She taught in both Utah and California and adored her fourth graders. Loye met her sweetheart Richard “Dick” Nelson while he was painting her mother’s house. Her mother asked him if he knew her daughter and he did not. She then asked, “Would you like to know her?” The rest is history. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on August 15, 1956. Together they had three children: Kathleen, David, and Kristine. Throughout their sixty-one year marriage, Loye lovingly supported all of Dick’s endeavors, especially his businesses. She had a great sense of humor and never failed to make people laugh. Her grandchildren fondly remember her slipping cash into their pockets with the condition that they didn’t tell Grandpa. Loye had a strong testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, and was a faithful member of the LDS Church. She is survived by her husband, Dick; her children, Kathy Christensen (Dave), David Nelson (Michelle), Kris Babb (Dave); her sister, Janice Datwyler (Boyd); her siblings in-law, Kent Nelson (Carol Jean) and Helen Nicholls (Byron Pat); her fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Rey Allred (Mary Carol). The family expresses gratitude to her caregiver Beverly, the staff at Courtyard at Jamestown, and Encompass Hospice for their loving care.
