Her name did not appear on the 1932 list published in the Evening Herald. She may have graduated in 1929 or 1933. ~ ~ ~ ~ Her first name does not appear in the high school section of the 1930 BYU Banyan, but she is shown as a cast member of "Little Women" in the 1928-1929 school year with her full name, in the High School section of the 1929 BYU Banyan. ~ ~ ~ ~ Her parents were Arthur A. Vance and Stella Jean Nelson Vance, of Provo, Utah. They had nine children -- five sons and four daughters: Weston Vance; David Vance; Morris Vance; Emery Merle (Merle) Vance; John Richard Vance (Lorraine) of American Fork, Utah; Argene Vance Olsen, of Castle Dale, Utah; Margaret Vance Koster, of Stockton, California; Virginia Vance (Dale) Husband, of Washington, Utah; and Jessie Vance (George) Diamond, of St. George, Utah. @1997 ~ ~ ~ ~ She wrote a history of the Crystal Rosenberg home in Castle Dale, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ On January 8, 2007, her photo appeared in the Emery County (Utah) Progress newspaper: "Rep. Brad Johnson and Kay McIff visit with Argene Olsen, perhaps the oldest living Republican in Emery County, and the first woman (in the early 1950s) to run for public office in the county. Argene, now age 92, along with other county residents met at the county building in Castle Dale to recognize Rep. Johnson for his 16 years of service to Emery County." @2007 ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: After a life filled with charity and service, Argene Vance Olsen, honored wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away in Price, Utah on June 1, 2007, at age 93, surrounded by family. Argene was born November 24, 1913 in Provo, Utah to Arthur Alonzo Vance and Estella Jean Nelson. She attended Brigham Young High School and graduated May 20, 1932 (sic) during the Great Depression. She was able to find work as an office clerk to pay off her own high school debts and help her family financially. She married Delon S. Olsen in 1943 and moved to Castle Dale where they had two sons Arthur Delon Olsen and Henning J. Olsen. In 1954 she was the first woman in the county to run for public office as County Treasurer. Although she lost, the publicity landed her a job at Utah Power and Light which she held for 23 years. She retired in 1978. She then served two full-time missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Virginia (at age 72) and in California (at age 75). Between the two missions at age 74 she graduated with a four-year degree from Brigham Young University. Throughout her life she was active in writing histories and doing genealogy. She managed her rental properties into her 90's. She is survived by her two sons, Arthur (Shannon), and Henning (Ilene) Olsen, 11 grandchildren, Scott Olsen, Rebecca Cummings, Michael Olsen, Christine Stevens, Margaret Jolley, Elizabeth Cunningham, Katherine Kinder, Kent Olsen, Danielle Olsen, Eric Luke Olsen, and Diana Olsen, and 13 great-grandchildren (Allie, Samatha, Daniel, Nathan, Madilyn, Tyler, Brooklynn, Joshua, Mathew, Emily, Jessica, Bret, Connor). Funeral services will be held in the Castle Dale 3rd Ward Chapel located at 800 N. 100 W. on Thurs., June 7, 2007 at 1 p.m. Viewings will be held Wednesday evening June 6, 2007 from 6-8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale and again at 12 noon prior to services on June 7, 2007 in the Castle Dale 3rd Ward Chapel. Merle Vance, age 86, died Wednesday March 26, 1997 in Springville, Utah. He was born June 29, 1910 in Provo, Utah. He was the eldest child of nine of parents Stella Jean Nelson Vance and Arthur A. Vance, long time residents of Provo, Utah. He was a member of the LDS 10th Ward in Springville. A graduate of Brigham Young High School, Classes of 1927 & 1928, and of Brigham Young University, Merle worked as a night clerk at Hotel Roberts and shared a dairy route with his brother Morris throughout their college years. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Weston, David, and Morris. Survivors include one brother, John Richard Vance (Lorraine) of American Fork, Utah; and four sisters: Argene Vance Olsen, Castle Dale, Utah; Margaret Vance Koster, Stockton, California; Virginia Vance Husband (Dale), Washington, Utah; and Jessie Vance Diamond (George), St. George, Utah. Elder John Henry Vandenberg, an Emeritus General Authority who served as Presiding Bishop for eleven years, [an Assistant to the Twelve for four years, and in the First Quorum of Seventy for two years] died 3 June 1992 of natural causes. Elder Vandenberg, eighty-seven, began his service as Presiding Bishop in 1961. He was named an Assistant to the Twelve in 1972 and was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy in 1976. He received emeritus status two years later. Born in Ogden, Utah, on 18 December 1904, Elder Vandenberg was the fifth child of Dirk and Maria Alkema Vandenberg, a Dutch immigrant couple. He graduated from Weber Academy (now Weber State University) in 1923 and worked as an accountant with John Clyde and Co., livestock commission agents at Ogden Stockyards. In 1925, Elder Vandenberg was called to serve a mission in the Netherlands, where he served a portion of his time as mission secretary. It was on his mission that Elder Vandenberg met his future wife, a young convert named Ariena Stok. She immigrated to Utah some time after Elder Vandenberg returned home. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on 10 June 1930. They had two daughters, Lenore V. Mendenhall of Alpine, Utah, and Norine V. Francis of Sandy, Utah. (Sister Vandenberg died on 13 June 1992.) During the early years of his marriage, Elder Vandenberg worked in Salt Lake City for a sheep and wool merchandising firm. He later transferred to Denver, where he continued to work with the same company. While in Denver, he served as stake mission president and counselor in a stake presidency. While serving as Presiding Bishop, Elder Vandenberg was a member of the Church Expenditures Committee, the General Priesthood Committee, and the Correlation Committee. He also served as chairman of the Church Welfare Committee, presided over the Aaronic Priesthood of the Church, and was chairman of the General Scouting Committee and Health Services Corporation. While serving as an Assistant to the Twelve, he served as managing director of the Church’s physical facilities department, supervising three major divisions: real estate, building, and maintenance.

Bonnie Jean Varner (Drama/Speech Teacher) (Young) ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Salem, Oregon – Dr. Bonnie Jean Young died peacefully in her home on February 15, 2013 at the age of 81. Bonnie was born in Kentucky to Letha and George Jepson Turner but spent the majority of her life in Oregon. She received her graduate degrees from Brigham Young University, where served as a faculty member at BY High School; Portland State University; and the University of Oregon. Bonnie was a master teacher, Professor Emeritus from Western Oregon University, where she served as professor, program director of The Handicapped Learner Program and the Rural Special Education Program, and assistant dean of the OSU/WOU School of Education. After retirement Bonnie served as a guest professor at Willamette University. She was recognized as Woman of the Year in 1989 by the YWCA and received a Distinguished Service Award from the State System of Higher Education. As a grant writer at WOU, Bonnie wrote and directed training grants in special education. She was responsible for $5 million dollars worth of grants, which provided tuition remission to hundreds of teachers. When the Rural Special Education program was awarded Program of the Year in March of 1989 it was estimated that the students receiving these grants served 3,780 students with disabilities a year. In May of 1991 Oregon Consulting Teacher Conference created the Bonnie Young Award for Leader in Educational Consultation. She was Given the Pioneer Club Award for Professional Services by the Oregon Association for Children With Learning Disabilities in 1993. And in 1998 was presented an award in appreciation of dedicated service by the Executive Board of the Oregon Consulting Teachers Association. Bonnie always loved gardening and served as President of the Master Gardeners for the local chapter. She was heard on the radio station KBZY each month with “What to Do In the Garden.” She was also the voice of Oregon Centennial historical readings. She was very active in her church, Unity of Salem, where she served in a variety of ways including President of the Board for four years. She also served on the Benchmark Committee, the Evolutionary Council and the Habitat Team. She also taught classes in public speaking and directed the Readers Theater Team. She is survived her cousins Marge Livermore, Terry and Pat Crites, Bob and Shirley Hanson, and Cora Lee McClean and her friend of 38 years, Dr. Bonnie Staebler. Americas Loan Channel, Owner. @2010 ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Gregory Vernon, 1947 ~ 2014. Gregory Glenn Vernon, 67, died of natural causes at his home in Moab, Utah, on December 10, 2014. He is survived by his five children, and a stepson whom he dearly loved as his own. He was very proud of all his children and especially proud of his eight grandchildren. He spent much of his life in Colorado, where he loved the mountains and the outdoor adventures it offered. He would also divide his time with his home state of Utah. There, he spent the last part of his life enjoying the comfort and warmth of Moab — spending his time with both new friends and old. Greg attended Brigham Young High School in Provo, Utah where he graduated in the Class of 1965. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from BYU and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver. With a strong entrepreneurial drive he ran many businesses throughout his life. He was a natural teacher and very knowledgeable. No matter the subject he always seemed to know quite a bit about it and he relished long discussions and debates. Greg also loved the adventure of travel. In fact, he visited or lived in every state in the United States except Hawaii. As a young man he served a mission for the LDS Church in what was then called the Alaskan Canadian Mission. And several times he made return visits to that beautiful land and more often told great stories from his experiences there. He is dearly missed by family and friends across the country. A memorial celebration was held December 16, 2014 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Evergreen Chapel, 7645 Malamute Drive, Evergreen, Colorado. Class of 1920? On Tuesday, July 8, 1997, Stella Vernon Thacker died peacefully at home after a long, productive life and a relatively short illness. Mrs. Thacker, a life-long resident of Vernal and Ashley Valley was born April 2, 1901. She lived in Maeser and Vernal all her 96 years except for one year when she attended Brigham Young Academy in Provo to obtain her teaching certificate. She is the daughter of Andrew J. and Ada Allen Vernon. Her life centered around her family. She was the oldest and the last-surviving member of her two brothers, Arlin and Alton, and two sisters, Ethel (Charles Palmer) and Bertha (Lloyd Richards). Stella was active in church and community affairs, serving in many positions in the church auxiliaries. She belonged to the DUP, Camp Tokawana, and was instrumental in helping get the old Tithing office moved from the middle of town to its present location, across from the Vernal Tabernacle, soon to be temple. Stella married Leslie P. Thacker on September 6, 1922 in the Salt Lake Temple. He died in 1990. They were the parents of four children: Vivian, who died at at age 15; Royal, who died soon after birth. Two sons survive her, Dale F. (Marilyn) of Vernal, and Doral Leslie (Ted) and wife, Lila of Maricopa, Ariz.; ten grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, July 11, 1997, in Vernal, Utah. Interment, Maeser Fairview Cemetery. [Deseret News, Friday, July 11, 1997]
