Taylor, Sr. a native of Provo, Utah, had served as a General Authority since April 6, 1958, when he was sustained as an Assistant to the Council of the Twelve. He continued his service as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy from October 1, 1976 until he was given emeritus status September 30, 1978. He was a former managing director of the Church’s welfare services program. At the time of his call to general Church service, he was presiding over the California Mission. Prior to his mission appointment, he had served for ten years as president of the East Sharon and Sharon stakes in Provo, Utah. During that time he was also chairman of the Mt. Timpanogos Welfare Region, which then comprised ten stakes, and the Central Utah Welfare Region. From 1944 to 1946, he served as bishop of Provo’s Pleasant View Ward. Elder Taylor was born November 22, 1903 in Provo, the son of Arthur Nicholls and Maria Louise Dixon Taylor. His parents had the following children: Arthur Dixon Taylor, BYH Class of 1915; Elton L. Taylor, BYH Class of 1918; Alice Taylor (Nelson), BYH Class of 1919; Henry Dixon Taylor, Sr., BYH Class of 1921; Clarence D. Taylor; and Ruth Elaine Taylor (Kartchner). Henry (Sr.) was reared on a farm in Provo, which provided the background for his later service in the welfare program. After graduating from Brigham Young High School in Provo in 1921, Elder Taylor worked as an accountant for a real estate company before accepting a call to the Eastern States Mission. He was president of the Connecticut District and later served as mission secretary. Returning home, he received a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Brigham Young University in 1929. In 1937 he received his master of arts degree in retailing from New York University Graduate School. On December 26, 1929, he married Alta Hansen of Richfield, Utah, in the Salt Lake Temple. They were the parents of four sons. After his first wife died, Elder Taylor married Ethelyn Peterson Taylor in 1986. Elder Taylor was long associated with the family mercantile business, Dixon-Taylor-Russell Home Furnishers, in Utah County. Active in civic affairs, he was a past president of the Provo Chamber of Commerce and Provo Kiwanis Club, and vice-president and chairman of the executive committee of Utah Valley LDS Hospital. He was survived by his widow, Ethelyn, Salt Lake City, Utah; sons, Henry D. Taylor, Jr. [Senior Class President, BYH Class of 1949], Palo Alto, California; Anthony H. He was eighty-three years old. Services were held in the Salt Lake Eagle Gate Stake Center, with burial at the Provo City Cemetery. Also speaking at the funeral were President Gordon B. Class of 1956. Hyde L. Taylor. Football, Basketball, Track, Baseball, Lettermen Vice President, Spanish Club, Junior Prom Committee, Senior Hop Committee. BYU Open Major 1981. Married Gwen Moon, BYH Class of 1956. She was a Varsity Cheerleader, and in the Pep Club, Chorus, Library Staff, Junior Prom Committee, and Senior Hop Committee. ~ ~ ~ ~ Hyde and I were married in August of 1957. Hyde had to be in Cedar City to play football by the end of August, so we married before school started. Hyde played one year at Cedar City and then transferred to Provo. He took classes at BYU and UVSC. Hyde worked for a construction company and went to school. He was in the Army Reserve and really liked it, so we decided to give the Army a try and like they say, the rest is history. By the time we joined the Army, we had two girls. We stayed in the Army for twenty-plus years and traveled all over the country. Hyde ran the Airborne School at Ft. Benning, Georgia, for several years in between trips to Okinawa and Viet Nam. He had two trips to Viet Nam, and we had post-war babies, two boys. We were assigned to BYU ROTC department and we retired from BYU in 1980. Hyde has been in apartment management for about fifteen years, and the hardwood floor business until this last year. He installed and finished hardwood floors until he had to replace a knee, then he retired to take care of two of our grandchildren. This is the situation as it stands for now. I have worked in many jobs as we traveled around the country. I worked for Kent Collins at J.C. Penneys in Provo in the shoe department. That was probably the most fun of any of my jobs, as Kent was fun to work for, and I got to see everyone as they came in the back door from the parking lot. I have worked at a milk bar, a hardware store, a drug store, a drive-in, a foreman on a strawberry crew, and then after Hyde retired, I got my Real Estate License. That was in 1980, and I have been doing Real Estate since. I have had a few side jobs such as helping Hyde with the Senior Citizens during the summer at Branbury Park, when he managed it, and making tarts for weddings. Now I just do Real Estate and Hyde tends the grandkids. We both have enjoyed a great experience traveling around the country. We learned to camp and cook in dutch ovens and love the outdoor world. We have met some wonderful friends and have kept in touch with them. We have held many jobs in the Church and learned that no matter where you go you always have a family waiting for you. We saw much of the U.S. and Hyde got to see much of the world. We did enjoy our adventure in the military and would do it all over again. It is always fun to get sentimental and remember our days at good old BY High. My kids' favorite thing to do was to go through our yearbooks. They would laugh and have the best time with our styles and hair-do’s. We were so lucky to have gone there and have the happy memories of being with such good people. We will always treasure knowing all of our classmates and teachers. Kids now will never know how much fun it was to dance in 250-A, or have the fun assemblies, or the fun ball games, or the fun Chorus trips. We could go on for hours talking about the mischief Dean Maiben was always in. Those were the good old days. @2006 ~ ~ ~ ~ Email sent to taygwe@wfrmls.com bounced back. @2010

Class of 1964. James Harvey Taylor. Tennis, Chorus, Seminary Graduate. BYU BA Art 1970. BYU MA Painting & Sculpture 1974. Married Debra Lynn Halterman. James Harvey Taylor Watercolors. OREM -- Sky, rocks, trees and water make James Harvey Taylor a happy man. And when he combines those same elements in a painting, they make a lot of other people happy as well. Everything else -- the man-made things -- are secondary in the work of this Orem artist. That is what I like to paint. I have found my niche, said Taylor, 54, who has been finding his place in the artistic world for the past 25 years. This is my mission in life. I have been painting since I was 11 and I love the profession. The love has always been there. Taylor chooses to express his love of landscape scenes through acrylic paint. Thinning it out gives the work a watercolor appearance, while adding a paste and a gel create the look of an oil painting. The artist describes the texture of that thicker paint as sensuous, rich and buttery. I do not like oils that are too polished. I like a rough, bold stroke. That is pure excitement right there, Taylor said. Such a passion for art has come easily for Taylor, who remembers his mother always thought he should do something more serious. During his years at Brigham Young High School, he could not wait to get to art class and became mesmerized by the watercolor works of his teacher, A. Lamoyne Garside. Everything else was done just to get him through until graduation. Taylor went on to graduate from BYU in art instruction for secondary schools, then taught for a couple of years in Wasatch County. After going back to school for a masters degree in art, one might say the call of the wild took Taylor out of his classroom and back to his studio. Painting is just where I am at. But you live from one painting to the next, especially when you paint what you want, Taylor said. Finding exactly what he wanted to paint has taken the artist from one end of Utah to the other, across the nation and to the British Isles. Getting out gives Taylor a chance to gather the subject matter he needs for his next work -- that is, if he can find a place to park. Taylor says he had to walk around most of the cities he visited during his trip to the British Isles last year. The back roads he traveled were too narrow to allow him to pull over and sketch or photograph the scenes he sought to recreate on canvas. You just basically walk the city. I try to commit as much as possible to memory, but I do take reference photos and do sketching and take notes, Taylor said. Then I take them back to paint in my studio. I do not paint outdoors anymore. It is too hard with the bugs, the sun, the dogs, the weather and the paranoid mothers who think you are there to take their children. Once back in his studio, Taylor does his best to capture the essence of the landscapes. He favors impressionistic designs for their ability to express moods and allow the viewer to get involved with those feelings. He tends to steer away from the hard edges and tight lines. Consequently, those interested in his creations tend to be people with a good background in art. The artist said people just venturing into the art world normally start out with safer works -- pictures that have more detail -- and then grow into more conceptual pieces. While original pieces by Taylor can be found in Park City and some Oregon galleries, he travels around the country, taking his limited edition prints to dealers in some 35 states. But being his own publisher has benefits as well as drawbacks. When you go with a publisher, you lose artistic license. They publish what sells in the market. Being self-published, I do what I want. But it is very expensive if you let yourself take over. There are some pictures I would like to publish but I know they would not sell. So, you have to balance things, Taylor said, adding Utah has some great painters but not so many great buyers. Class of 1902. Lorenzo Taylor (1885-1970), son of Joseph Allen Taylor and Mary Jane Lake, Mormons who had moved with their convert parents from Kentucky and the Carolinas via Nauvoo, Illinois to Utah in 1850. Lorenzo was born at Farr West, Weber County, Utah, where his parents were farmers. In 1898 he moved (with his parents) to Roy, Utah, where they ran the Weber County Infirmary (poor farm). Lorenzo attended the Brigham Young Academy in Provo in 1901-1902, where he met Mary Maude Harding. They married in the Salt Lake Temple early in 1904, and almost immediately he left to serve a 4-year mission to the Hawaiian Islands. Upon his return, Lorenzo and Maude settled on the family farm at Farr West. There he and his family were always active in the Church, and he served as Bishop of the Farr West Ward between 1927 and 1939. Eventually Lorenzo sold the farm to one of his sons, although he continued to work there until his death. ~~~~ Lorenzo Taylor was born December 2, 1885 at Harrisville [Farr West], Weber County, Utah. His parents were Joseph Albert Taylor and Mary Jane Lake Taylor. Lorenzo first married Mary Maud Harding on February 10, 1904, in Salt Lake City. He second married Jennie Harding on June 12, 1952. He died December 2, 1970 in Ogden, Weber County, Utah. Interment, Ogden, Utah. [Lorenzo Taylor's name is not listed in the known fragment of a 1902 Commencement program, but the program is incomplete.]
