Faculty & Staff. W. Dwayne Belt [Wilbur]. He served as the Principal XIX of BYH during the 1961-1962 academic year. As head of all student activities, he came to BY High from Colorado. Dr. Belt added much to the success of BY High. He endeavored to improve working relationships between the faculty and the student body. His sense of humor and personality helped to create a friendly atmosphere. Working directly with students, he provided understanding leadership through wise counsel and advice. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Dwayne Belt of Orem, passed away from a sudden severe illness on September 14, 2007, at the age of 78. He was born in Burroak Township, Iowa, on August 9, 1929 to Wilbur and Ruth Clement Belt. When he was 16, his family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. He spent his senior year there involved in drama, music and track, and was voted 'most versatile graduate'. He attended BYU, where he participated in the band and on the track team, graduating with a BA in Music in 1952. While at BYU, he was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dwayne met Glenys Rollins in the clarinet section of the BYU Concert Band. They became eternal sweethearts when they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 25, 1952. He served in the United States Army from 1952 until 1954. Dwayne was a school teacher and principal in Lyman, then Evanston, Wyoming; after which he attended Northern Colorado University, receiving his master's and doctor's degrees. In 1961, Dwayne began to serve as Principal at B.Y. High School, through the 1961-1962 academic year.. He then transferred to BYU's College of Education, where he taught for 30 years. He served faithfully in church positions throughout his life, including missions with his wife to the Las Vegas, Nevada Mission, and the St. George Temple Visitor's Center and historic sites. At the time of his death, he was Branch President at the Canyon Breeze Assisted Living Center in Orem. He enjoyed being a member of the Orem Golden K Kiwanis Club. Dwayne loved sports and was an avid BYU, Utah Jazz and New York Yankees fan. He also loved good music and was very proud of the musical and athletic accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed a simple life - he was reliable, thrifty, punctual and orderly. He preferred a good hamburger and a malt to a filet mignon and a fancy dessert. His family adored him. Dwayne is survived by his wife, Glenys, of Orem; and his five children: Carol Belt [BYH Class of 1972~H] (Jon) Mitchell of Lehi; Connie Belt [BYH Class of 1973~H] (Jay) Jones, of Fairview, Texas; Terry (Hollie) Belt [BYH Class of 1975~H], of Orem; Shawna Belt [BYH Class of 1977~H] (John) Edwards, of Provo; Linda (Tom) Urquhart, of Orem; 28 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, David, Jerry, Jimmy and Donna Belt, all of Las Vegas; and Peggy Hoskin, of Cedar City. Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 19, 2007, in the Sharon Park 3rd Ward chapel, 200 North 200 East, Orem. Interment, Orem City Cemetery. Sophomore Basketball, Opera. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: James Charles Bement (J.C.), 79, of Orem passed away suddenly on March 4, 2010, due to acute leukemia. J.C. was born January 11, 1931 in Price, Utah, to Herman Charles Bement and Bertha Bement. Early in his childhood, JC moved to Utah Valley where he attended Brigham Young High School and BYU. He served his country proudly as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, during which J.C. also served as a Drill Instructor for the Army's Combat Leadership School. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he met and married his sweetheart and soulmate, Colleen Mitchell. They were married in Provo on November 26, 1954, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple. J.C. was devoted to Colleen and their family. J.C. was employed by Geneva Steel for over 30 years. Following his retirement from Geneva, he managed the Tiffin Dining Room at ZCMI for 11 years, where J.C. befriended many people through his love of food and joy for life. He had a great fondness for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He especially loved taking long car rides with his wife in the mountains. J.C. was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many teaching and leadership positions. He loved working with the youth of the church, where his time as a Scout Leader was especially important to him. J.C. was preceded in death by his parents along with his brother, Russell, and his sister, Elaine; his daughter-in-law, Teresa; as well as his grandson, Joseph. J.C. is survived by his loving wife, Colleen; his son, Michael Bement, and grandchildren Emily (and her husband, Brenden), Amanda, and James; his daughter, Julie Garcia, and grandchildren Brittany, Alonso, Parker, and Marissa; eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Harlan, sister, Carol, and sister-in-law, Delta; numerous nieces and nephews; and his wonderful dog and companion, Riley. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at the Berg Drawing Room Chapel of Provo, 185 East Center Street. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo on Monday evening 6-8 p.m. or on Tuesday from 1-2:15 p.m. Interment East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery, Provo. Bendixsen, born August 24, 1916, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died December 14, 1990. His parents: Carl Stephen Knud Bendixsen & Mary Caroline Nokes Bendixsen. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS WIFE'S OBITUARY: Riverdale, Utah - Laura Nelle Taylor Bendixsen, 90, died Sunday, December 9, 2007 in Ogden of natural causes. She was born March 11, 1917 in Dutch Gap, Virginia, a daughter of Robin Adair and Emmie Bowe Martin Taylor. On November 21, 1945, Laura Nelle married Grant Douglas Bendixsen in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Grant preceded her in death on December 14, 1990. She lived in Virginia, Salt Lake City, Provo, Coalville, and resided in Riverdale since 1967. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served a mission in the East Central States. In addition, she served as Primary President, Relief Society President, Stake Nursery Leader, Stake Missionary, and Relief Society and Primary Teacher. Laura Nelle, one of the Jolly Dutch Gappers, performed on the radio during World War II and various other places. She was a member and President of Yesharah, and committee Chairman of the Riverdale 4th of July Days, when it was named Old Glory Days. Education Week at BYU was her annual tradition for over 45 years and she attended Chautauqua for 47 consecutive years. She loved decorating her yard for Easter and helped compile a cook book or the church building fund. She had a passion for writing and was the Edgemont Correspondent for the Provo Daily Herald, a writer for the Summit Bee in Coalville, and a reporter for Riverdale in the Roy Chronicle. Surviving are two sons, Jan Robin Bendixsen [BYH Class of 1966 ~ H], Scot Douglas (Lynette) Bendixsen; and five daughters, Lewanna Bendixsen(Gary) Christianson, Sanoma Bendixsen Burke, Joy Bendixsen (Brent) Bastow, Fonda Bendixsen Evans, Patrice Bendixsen(Wesley) Ervin; son-in-law, Gary Fierro; 31, grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and her brother, Donald Taylor. Laura Nelle was preceded in death by: husband Grant, daughter Tanya Bendixsen Fierro, six brothers, three sisters, one grandson Lance Douglas Fox, and granddaughter Erin Bendixsen. Funeral services held Saturday, December 15, 2007 at the Riverdale Stake Center, 4000 South 1150 West. Class of ?? ~ Honorary. Beth Marie Bennett Willardson passed away suddenly on Dec. 14, 2001 in Spokane, Washington of a cerebral hemorrhage. DOB? She was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah to Amanda Marie Gleason Bennett and Sterling John Bennett. She grew up in Provo, attended Brigham Young Training School and Provo High, and graduated with high honors from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in chemistry, the second woman ever to do so. Beth married Robert Kent Willardson September 12, 1947, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they moved to Ames, Iowa, where she did graduate work in chemistry and served as a graduate instructor. They then moved to Columbus, Ohio, where their older two daughters were born. In 1960, they moved to southern California where a third daughter was born. They built their dream home in Arcadia, California. After twelve years there, the family moved to Spokane, Washington, where they have resided the past twenty-seven years. Beth dedicated her life to her family. She adored her grandparents and devoted herself to her children and grandchildren. She emphasized to her daughters the importance of women's achievements and inspired all three to pursue graduate education. Beth was proud of her pioneer heritage and spent many hours doing genealogy work. She was a member of AAUW, the Democratic Party, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A strong-minded and brilliant woman, she followed current events closely and loved films, flowers, her pets, and long drives in the country. She is survived by her husband, Robert, of Spokane; daughters Amanda Marie (Terry) Ballou of Chelan, WA, Ann (Richard) Engar of Salt Lake City, and Jennie Lynette of Spokane; brother Sterling John (Marilyn) Bennett of North Salt Lake; and three grandchildren. A funeral service was held Friday, December 21, 2001 in Provo, Utah. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. [Deseret News, Thursday, December 20, 2001.]

Class of 1960. Gary H. Bennett. Senior Class Vice President. Football, Baseball, Track, Lettermen. [Name listed as both Bennett and Bennet in 1960 Wildcat yearbook.] BYU 1967. After BYH graduation in 1960 I went on six-month active duty with the Utah National Guard, stationed at Fort Ord, California. In 1961 went on a mission to the Central States with headquarters in Independence, Missouri. Returned home in 1963. Worked and attended BYU. Worked for Harmon and Clegg Construction for a year, then went to work for Provo City Power. In 1969 married Nancy Latimer in the SLC temple and adopted her four children after which we had three more. Marriage lasted 23 years before ending in divorce. In 1998 Marred Linda Burr in the Mount Timpanogos Temple. We have 15 grandchildren which I enjoy very much. Over the years I have worked eight years as meat cutter and manager, then spent last working years at Geneva Steel. I retired in 2003. I am enjoying skiing in the winter, and fishing and boating in the summer along with traveling anytime I get a chance. Her parents were Franklin Tennyson Bennett, born August 21, 1881 in Provo, Utah, who died October 25, 1957 in Provo, Utah; and Elsie Ashworth Bennett, born April 13, 1882 in Beaver, Utah, who died May 5, 1965 in Provo, Utah. Helen Bennett graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1937. ~ ~ Helen first married Wells Lindquist Brady, born February 6, 1920 in Fairview, Sanpete County, Utah. They were married on June 14, 1941 in Coalville, Utah. Wells Brady died on May 9, 1999 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. ~ ~ Helen second married Rex Lamont Olsen, who was born July 8, 1932 in Orem, Utah. They married on January 28, 1966 in Provo, Utah. Rex died on July 28, 1998 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Helen Bennett Olsen died on November 8, 1984 in Bountiful, Utah.

Her parents were Frank & Elsie Ashworth Bennett. May married Andrew Thaddeus "Thad" Hansen. Thad was born May 3, 1915 in Elsinore, Utah. His parents were Andrew Neils Hansen & Olive Sorensen Hansen. They were living in Richfield, Utah in 1940. Thad Hansen died on September 10, 1967 in Provo, Utah. His interment, Provo City Cemetery.
