Class of 1980? If Brigham Young High School was closed in 1968, why are classes 1969 through 1980 included in this website? The closing in 1968 affected many students from Kindergarten through 11th Grade who had planned to attend and graduate from BY High. They were all forced to leave and complete their secondary education elsewhere. At the request of many who were students in those years, the classes of 1969 through 1980 have been added to this website directory as honorary alumni of BY High School. Sometimes called the "Ghost Classes" of BY High, all of them -- K through 11 -- were included in the historic final BYH Wildcat Yearbook published in 1968, along with the final graduating class of 1967-1968. Before that, students who attended BYH but who did not graduate with their classes were also marked as honorary alumni.

Members of the Class of 1976 were Fourth Graders in the elementary program at the BY Training School, when Brigham Young High School, along with the Brigham Young Laboratory Elementary Training School, was closed in May of 1968. At the request of the members of this class, this class has been added as honorary members to the BYA~BYH alumni directory. Most had been together since kindergarten, and if the school had continued, many would have graduated together in the spring of 1976. Had they done so, they would have been honored as the Centennial Class of Brigham Young High School, because the school opened its doors to its first class in 1876. In addition to the first 29 students who enrolled at Brigham Young Academy on January 3, 1876, there is a sometimes overlapping list of 59 students found on a slightly later roster of earliest students at BYA. Most did not graduate, but they are of significant historical interest. This list includes the first 29 and the first 59, for a total of 63.

Brigham Young University, The Earliest Classes - 1904 to 1935.

In this Alumni Directory, our focus is on the often-forgotten BY Academy senior high school classes between 1877 and 1903, and on the BY High School senior classes from 1904 to 1968.

The academic year 1903-1904 marked the first official year of both Brigham Young University and Brigham Young University High School, after Brigham Young Academy had been dissolved in June 1903 at the end of the 1902-1903 academic year. Since 1876, Brigham Young Academy had always been a secondary school, with a relative handful of "collegiate graduates". The 1904 graduating class, for example, included 5 BYU graduates [13%], and 38 BYHS graduates [87%].

As of November 16, 2008, we have compiled a list of the 745 earliest graduates of Brigham Young University, beginning in 1904 and continuing through 1935 [see below]. Of this total, 291 (39%) had first graduated from high school at Brigham Young Academy or Brigham Young University High School.

Our goal is to list all Brigham Young high school graduates, and we include 454 (61%) collegiate-only names simply to reduce ambiguity. For more convenient searching, try the name index search.

Class of 1928. Burnell Aagard. Graduated from Brigham Young High School on Thursday, May 24, 1928. He was born September 19, 1910 in Fountain Green, Utah, the son of Mary Ellen Ostler and John Edward Aagard. He was reared and educated in Fountain Green. He graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1928, and then graduated from Brigham Young University. He married Mary Hansen. They were sealed in the Manti LDS Temple on March 28, 1942. He was manager of D.L. Evans Bank, Albion, Idaho, and manager of the Royal Inn Motel, Provo. As a younger man he spent his summers in the family sheep business. He was a member of the Ogden 78th Ward, a high priest. He and Mary served a mission in Nauvoo, Illinois, and he had also served as a Stake Missionary in Burbank, California. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Provo. Survivors include his wife; two sons and one daughter, James Andrew (Kathleen) Aagard, Orlando, Florida; Brooks Burnell (Elizabeth) Aagard, Orem, Utah; Mary Andrea (Grant) Holland, Layton, Utah; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers and three sisters, Wesley and Welby Aagard, Vance Aagard, LaPrele Neville, Hazel Bailey, and Kenna Rasmussen. He was preceded in death by one brother, John; and one sister, Laurel. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 12, 1998, in Fountain Green, Utah. Interment, Fountain Green Cemetery. She was born in Fountain Green, Utah, June 17, 1909, daughter of Niels Peter Aagard and Rachel Collard Aagard. She attended schools in Fountain Green; and she graduated from Brigham Young High School in Provo in 1926; and she graduated from BYU in 1931. She married Newell A. Johnson, February 28, 1934 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She was devoted homemaker and a loving and giving person, and an avid gardener. Throughout her life she was active in both church and civic affairs, and was actively engaged as wife and partner with her husband in the sheep business for over 50 years. She is survived by her husband, Provo; three daughters: Mrs. Gloria Martineau (Reed),Salt Lake City; Mrs. Kaye Ivie (Devon), Idaho Falls, Idaho; Mrs. Kristine Lee (Ted), South Jordan; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren. [Deseret News, Saturday, February 17, 1996.]~ ~ ~ ~ HER HUSBAND'S OBITUARY: Newell Adorian Johnson, 99, passed away peacefully March 23, 2006, at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Utah. He was born July 8, 1906, in Fountain Green, Utah, to Franklin and Olena Johnson, the second of nine children. He attended school in Fountain Green; also attending Snow College in Ephraim for two years. He served as an LDS missionary in Australia from 1929-1931. On February 28, 1934, he married C. Joy Aagard in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They made their home in Provo, Utah, where they raised three daughters. His wisdom and business sense enabled him to build a successful sheep ranching operation, and he remained actively involved in many aspects of agriculture. He loved the outdoors and was a responsible steward over everything that was placed in his charge. He was well known for his intelligence, quick wit, generosity, and his extraordinary ability to make friends and influence people. Throughout his life, he held many leadership positions, serving on local, state, and national boards for the BLM, the Big Game Board, as President of the Timpanogos Canal Company, and President of the Utah Wool Growers Association. Recently, he was honored with the Woolgrowers' Career Service Award, as BYU's Basketball Fan of the Year, and was the Senior Attendee at the Old Sheepherder Gathering this year. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held numerous positions, serving as Bishop of the Provo Seventh Ward. He was preceded in death by his wife and all of his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his daughters: Mrs. Gloria (Reed) Martineau, of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Kaye (Devon) Ivie, of Provo; and Mrs. Kristine (Ted) Lee, of West Mountain; and their children and grandchildren. Class of 1931? Reva Aagard. She was a member of the BYH Peppettes during the 1930-1931 school year, according to the 1931 BYU Banyan. ~ ~ ~ ~ Annie Reva (Reva) Aagard was born on December 4, 1914 in Fountain Green, Utah. Her parents were Andrew James Aagard and Anna Luvina Jensen Aagard. She married Rulon England on July 22, 1936. Rulon England died on July 20, 1994 in West Valley City, Utah. Interment, Tooele City Cemetery, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Reva Aagard England: Our loving mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Annie Reva Aagard England, passed away July 20, 1994 in Jordan Valley Holy Cross Hospital. Class of 1897? ~ Honorary. Welby Aagard. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Welby K. Aagard, 91, of Mt. Pleasant, Utah, (formerly of Salt Lake City) died January 11, 2007, at home. He was born May 31, 1915, to John E. And Mary Ellen (Nellie) Ostler Aagard in Fountain Green, Utah. He married Opal Draper on March 24, 1939, in the Manti LDS Temple. She passed away May 8, 2004. He attended Brigham Young Academy (high school), Moroni High School and Snow College. He was a lifetime sheep rancher in the Chalk Creek Basin of Summit County, Utah. He served as City Councilman and Mayor of Fountain Green, Utah and as a High Councilman in the Moroni Utah LDS Stake. He served as Vice President and President of the Utah Wool Growers Association. During his life he received recognition as "Sheepman of the Year", "Outstanding Stewardship of Public Lands" from the Bureau of Land Management, "Natural Resource Conservation Award." He will be remembered for his integrity, friendliness, hard work, love for the sheep industry, and dedication to land conservation. He will be sincerely missed by his family. His is survived by his son and daughters, Diane (Neil) Jorgensen of Mt. Pleasant, Utah; Kim (Anna) Aagard of Moroni, Utah; and Marcia Aagard of Mt. Pleasant, Utah; eight grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren; sister, Kenna Rasmussen of Fountain Green, Utah. Elijah and Isaura had seven children: Dean Meredith Abegg, Joseph Abegg, Lothaire Abegg, Hal Abegg, Norma Abegg, Myrlon Abegg, and Gwen Abegg [BYH Class of 1956] Webster Cowley. ~ ~ ~ ~ BYU BA 1992. ~ ~ ~ ~ Gwen first married James Webster, a heart surgeon, who was accidentally killed in August 1982, leaving her with their six children, two girls and four boys. Gwen has since married Joseph F. [Foss] Cowley, Jr., a self-employed CPA, and the couple currently reside in West Virginia where Joseph is serving as the Charleston Mission President. @2006 ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Gwen Abegg Webster Cowley – 1938-2016. Gwen Cowley peacefully passed away January 18, 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah at the age of 77. She was blessed to have her loving family surrounding her during the time of her passing. Gwen was born July 22, 1938 in Tucson, Arizona to parents Elijah and Isaura Abegg. She attended Brigham Young High School, graduating in the Class of 1956, and then attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Later she married James (Jim) W. Webster, Jr. on July 2, 1959 in the Salt Lake Temple while he was attending medical school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His training would take them to other cities such as Seattle, Washington and Houston, Texas where he completed his cardiothoracic surgical training. After which, they settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, as Dr. Webster began his medical practice, and Gwen continued to raise their six children. Following Jim's untimely death in 1982, Gwen married Joseph F. Cowley September 12, 1997 in St. George, Utah. They were able to enjoy 18 wonderful years together as they spent time with their 30 grandchildren, traveling, and serving as mission presidents for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the West Virginia Charleston Mission from 2005 to 2008. She is preceded in death by her first husband, James W. Webster, Jr. M.D., her parents, and 6 older siblings. She is survived by her husband, Joseph F. Cowley, Jr., and six children: Chari (Bill) Moreton, Robb (Michelle) Webster, Chris (Jeff) Christensen, Richard C. (Heather) Webster, Gary S. (Shawna) Webster, Bryan J. University, Book 10, page 308. ~ ~ ~ ~ Meda Emily Abel Hunsaker, 90, of American Fork, died Friday, March 22, 1991 at the American Fork Hospital of causes incident to age. She was born July 31, 1900 in American Fork, to George E. and Mary Ellen Shelley Abel. Married Don L. Hunsaker, October 11, 1922 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died November 20, 1990. She graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1920, from BYU in 1948, and taught school, Second Grade, for 23 years. Having taught at Harrington, Forbes, and the Utah State Training School. She was a homemaker and member of the LDS Church, having served as a missionary in Florida, and as a temple worker. She loved gardening and yard care. Survived by two sons, four daughters, Max A. Hunsaker, Dora Helsing, Mrs. Delmar (Meda) Fraughton, all American Fork; Glen L. He married Amelia [Millie] Seegmiller of Richfield, Utah, on April 11, 1903 in Manti, Utah. She was born on July 4, 1883 in Richfield, Utah. Their three children: Newell Reid Acord [BYH Class of 1958] (Pam) of West Bountiful, Utah; Reid Henry Acord [BYH Class of 1962](Nancy), of West Bountiful; and Janeen Acord [BYH Class of 1968] (Paul) Kelly of Newport, Oregon [1997]. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: On November 19, 2023, our loving husband, father and grandfather -- known as Papa to his grandkids -- passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loved ones, fully immersed in their love. He was born on December 15, 1943 to Clair and Idona Acord in Mount Pleasant, Utah. He graduated from Brigham Young High School, graduating in the Class of 1962. He honorably served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, North British mission, from 1963 to 1965. Reid earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology / Chemistry from Brigham Young University in 1962; he completed the requirements for this degree while he was in high school, while also participating in high school athletics: football, basketball, track and baseball. He then attended the University of Utah (Go Utes!) in pursuit of his dream of becoming a Pharmacist. In June of 1971 he was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. He had a lengthy and accomplished career working at pharmacies from Tremonton to Toole and managing pharmacies at Albertson’s, Costco and Walgreens. He was a member of the Utah Pharmacy Association and served on the board of directors for 14 years. He was also President of the Utah Woolgrowers Association for 2 years. Reid loved horses, old Western movies, and the Uintah Mountains. He thoroughly enjoyed horse-pack camping trips in the Unitas spending time with his dad and brother at a secret lake deep in the backcountry called Acord Lake where you couldn’t catch a fish if your last name wasn’t Acord. Reid married the love of his life, Nancy Sharbono, in 1983; as partners in crime, they were inseparable up until the day of his passing. Reid will be missed for his kindness, his big heart, and his unwavering commitment to delivering well-timed dad jokes. Whenever anyone said, “I’m hungry”, he never passed up the opportunity to respond with: “Hi, Hungry, my name’s Reid.” Papa loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed attending their various football games, drag races and cheerleading competitions across multiple states. Reid is preceded in death by his parents: Clair and Idona; his brother, Newell; is survived by his wife, Nancy; sister, Janeen (Paul); daughters, Lisa and Lynette (Shawn); adopted son, Warren Harris, grandchildren: Shawntae Wyatt, McKinley Lloyd, Hailee Payeur, Lyndsay Lloyd; great grandchildren Kingston Moran, Navy Moran, Ridge Wyatt, Axel Wyatt, Ava Wyatt and Capri Wyatt. BYA Beaver Branch ~ Murdock Academy, Class of 1922? Mary Anna Adair. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Mary Anna Adair Allen, age 95, died September 15, 1999 in Orem, Utah. Born July 21, 1904 in Mammoth Creek in Garfield County, Utah, to Edwin Ruthvin Adair and Neminnie Sophia Clove. Orphaned at six, she was raised by her mother's sisters. She attended school at Orderville, Glendale and Murdock Academy. She married Woodruff Lloyd Allen, August 28, 1928 in the Salt Lake Temple. He died in 1977. She worked at Christensen's Department store in Richfield and for many years with the BYU Food Service. Anna was a faithful member of the LDS Church, and in later years, served proselyting; Family History; and Temple missions in Fresno, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. She was a consultant at the BYU Genealogical Library and a professional researcher in Scandinavian records. Anna will be fondly remembered by all, but especially by her grandchildren, to whom she gave unfailing love and support. Preceded in death by one brother, Ivor, and four sisters, Gertrude, Miriam, Emmaline, and Ruehama. Survived by three sons and two daughters: Dare (Diane) of Holladay; Phil (Janice) of Ogden; Dean (Nancy) of Gambrills, Maryland; Yolande Tew (Thirl) of Provo; and Carol Fowler of Salt Lake City; and by grandchildren, great- grandchildren and great great- grandchildren. He married Verda Esplin on February 21, 1922 in St. George, Utah. They had two children. He died on November 10, 1969 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment, Parowan.

How are they connected to BYH? ~ ~ ~ ~ HER HUSBAND: William Lester Mangum was born on February 12, 1920 in Provo, Utah. His parents were Willis Lester Mangum and Jennie Pearl Knight. He married Carma Adams on September 4, 1948 in Provo, Utah. They had five children. He died on July 9, 1997. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Carma Adams Mangum 1925 ~ 2011. Carma Adams Mangum passed away April 12, 2011. She was born in Cove, Utah on August 25, 1925 to loving parents George Thomas and Viola Harrison Adams. She took on many responsibilities at an early age for the care and concern of her family home and siblings, as her parents were deeply involved in survival during the Great Depression. This diligence, discipline and duty were traits that carried her through a lifetime of service to others. She attended public school in Provo, Utah and made a great many friendships that have lasted a lifetime. She received her BA degree from BYU in English, but remained a dedicated homemaker throughout her life. She loved to read, keep an elegant home, cook gourmet meals, travel, entertain, support her kids and grandkids in team sports and other activities. But most of all, she loved to dance with our dad! She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was sealed to her husband and children in the late 1990's. She was an excellent teacher and set a good example for all of her children. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, her beloved sister Carol Adams Mensel and her devoted husband William L. Mangum. She is survived by her five children: Jennie Sue Murdock, William Brent (Stacie), Gary Knight (Kay), Scott Adams (Karen), and Todd Adams; 19 grandchildren: Joseph Murdock (Jennifer), Esther Dick (Jeremy), Rebekah Bustamante (Ricardo), Christopher Murdock (Chelsey), April Murdock, and Jessica Gillespie (Kirk); Brent Jr. Mangum (Ashley), Jack Mangum (Rachel), Alex Mangum (Michelle), Daniel Mangum (Melissa) and Taylor Mangum; Jennifer Chunat (Glen), Jesse Mangum (Stephanie), Amanda Mangum, Gregory Mangum and Matthew Mangum; Justin Mangum, Holly Lang (Jason), and Michael Mangum; and brother George Thomas (Wilma) Adams, Jr. She is also survived by 22 beautiful great-grandchildren and two grand-dogs. We give thanks to her loyal and caring friends and neighbors who have shared life, love and wonderful memories with her over the past 45+ years. We would also like to express gratitude for the incredibly caring staff at the Care Source Hospice Center in Salt Lake. Graveside services were held immediately after the viewing.
