University, Book 10, page 40. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Roland Lars Olson, 87, died Thursday, June 21, 1990 at his home. Born September 9, 1902 at Mammoth, Juab County, Utah to Lars L. and Alice Taylor Jenkins Olson. Married Estella Goddard March 25, 1925 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She preceded him in death November 4, 1970. Married Rose H. Calaway May 1, 1971 in the Los Angeles LDS Temple. Reared and educated in Provo, Utah. Mr. Olson became a apprentice millman at age 12 and journeyman at 15. He graduated from Brigham Young High School, Class of 1920, and BYU. He did post graduate work at Oregon State University and USU. He taught school, 1929-53, at Eureka, Roosevelt and South High in Salt Lake City. He was employed as an electronics specialists at Coleman Engineering during the construction and operation of rocket test site at Hurricane Mesa. He retired in 1963. Mr. Olsen also farmed and owned Berry Springs Ranch. Active member LDS Church, served as both ward and stake Sunday School president, bishop, and temple ordinance worker for 29 years. He and his wife, Rose, served a mission in West Australia, 1972-74. He enjoyed woodworking and other handicrafts -- he specialized in restoring old trunks. Surviving family members include his wife Rose, St. George; four sons and two daughters, R. Dean Olson, Irvine, Calif.; Eldon L. Olsen, Gardena, Calif.; Alan K. Olson, St. George; Richard N. Olson, Riverton; Mrs. Reed (Enid) Newbold, West Jordan; and Mrs. Stanley (Diane) Esplin, St. George; stepson, Donald Calaway, St. George; 36 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert L. Olson, American Fork/St. George; and sister, Mrs. Alma (Lucille) King, Orem. Funeral services were held Monday, June 25, in St. George. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. Class of 1924? Alta Orser Crockett, 92, died August 8, 1999 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Alta was born November 18, 1906 in Vernal, Utah to Frank and Mary Orser. She married Darrell W. Crockett in Logan, Utah in 1931. Darrell died on April 10, 1972. She is survived by her three children; Don W. Crockett of Washington, D.C.; Ralph D. Crockett of Midvale, Utah; and Lyne Crockett Hunter of Arlington, Virginia. She has seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. At the age of 17, Alta attended the Brigham Young Academy in Provo, Utah, where she earned a teaching certificate after two years. She then taught school in Roosevelt, Utah for a year before attending the University of California at Berkeley. She ultimately earned her B.S. degree in clothing and textile design from Utah State Agricultural College (U.S.A.C.) in 1929. After a year of additional study at the University of Chicago, where she earned a Master's degree in textile design, she returned to Utah State as an Assistant Professor and taught classes in clothing and textile design for the next seven years. Alta was a founding member of the Chi Omega Sorority Chapter at Utah State, a member of the U.S.U. Women's club, the Utah State Emeriti, and several other organizations in Logan. She was an avid gardener with a hobby greenhouse, and an accomplished artist, painting with both oils and water colors. After her children graduated from college, she herself returned to U.S.U. as a graduate student and earned a further Master's degree in Sociology and Anthropology. Thereafter she taught a course in the Sociology of Fashion and Design at U.S.U. until she retired. In 1991, Alta moved to Salt Lake City, where she resided at the Parklane and later at the Parklane Manor. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Funeral services were held on Friday, August 13, 1999, in Logan, Utah. Interment, Logan Cemetery. [Deseret News, Wednesday, August 11, 1999] |
