Venola and Francis Cowley

Class of 1917. Venola Ohlwiler. She received a BYH Normal Certificate in 1917. Source: Annual Record, B.Y. University, Book 10, page 80. ~ ~ ~ ~ Venola Ohlwiler was born on December 29, 1896 in Heber, Utah. Her parents were John Fredrick Ohlwiler and Rhoda Elizabeth Hicken Ohlwiler. Venola married Francis Charles Cowley on June 30, 1920 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Venola died on May 30, 1995 in St. George Utah, and was buried in Heber, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Venola Ohlwiler Cowley, mother to four, grandmother to 15 and great-grandmother to 41. Teacher to many, and friend to all who knew her. From her many journals: ``I was born the year Utah was made a state. I was the oldest child to John Fredrick and Rhoda Hicken Ohlwiler. I remember the first automobile to come to Heber--not many people paid the 5 cents to ride, because it would never last. Sacrament meeting was interrupted for us to see the first airplane to fly. I have witnessed so many changes in my years. I attended BYU and earned a life-time teaching certificate. I taught school in Heber and then was called to the Western States Mission in 1923. I there met Francis C. Cowley and we were married June 30, 1926 in the Salt Lake Temple. We moved to Venice, Sevier County, where we farmed. I loved my associations with the great people there. After my mother died in 1935, we moved to the family home in Heber to take care of my father. We enjoyed many good friends and experiences here. Francis died suddenly in 1965 and many things changed. I have enjoyed spending time with my children and grandchildren. Music has always been a part of my life, since my father won a piano and I started music lessons when 9 years old. My records show I taught 400 students, and I thoroughly enjoyed every one of them, even those who didn't practice."

In her last five years Mother lived in Cedar City and St. George. Her children pay tribute to her for her unselfish love for them, and for her being willing to accept her loss of independence and still be gentle and loving to all who have had care of her. She is survived by her sister, Nell O. Shaffer, Fairfield, California; brother, her brother Wendell Ohlwiler, Paradise, Utah; by her children, Richard and Helen C. William, Cedar City; Kendall Cowley; John and Wilma Cowley, all of Heber; Melvin and Ruth Annette Montgomery, Jackson, Tennessee; 14 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her sisters and a brother, Thelma Ohlwiler Wootton, LeOra Ohlwiler Lindsay and Ferrin Ohlwiler. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 3rd 1995 in the Heber Third Ward Chapel. Her interment, Heber City Cemetery, Utah. [Deseret News, May 1995.]

Sue was born on April 22, 1951, in Provo, Utah, to William Victor and Hannah Reynolds Oldroyd. She married Joseph Terry Pyne in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 7, 1970. They were married 47 years. Sue attended Brigham Young High School until it closed at the end of her junior year. She finished her senior year at Provo High School, where she graduated in 1969. She continued her college studies at Brigham Young University for a short time, studying English until she became a full-time mother. Her family was everything to her. She was an amazing mother, grandmother and wife! She lived a life of service and was always there for her family or anyone who needed her. She had an innate goodness and was always eager to help the ones she loved. She was a lifelong member of the LDS Church and held many positions in Primary. Her beautiful voice and love for singing were shared while serving in her favorite calling as the Primary music chorister. She also enjoyed her time serving in the Cub Scouts. Sue had a great talent and love for cooking, baking and gardening, which she generously shared with her loved ones and community for most of her life. She spoiled her children with fresh baked homemade bread and cookies daily, warm out of the oven as the kids arrived home from school. She also made elaborately decorated birthday cakes and homemade suckers for every birthday, holiday or other notable occasion. She baked the best peach pies in the state with fruit grown at her husband’s orchard, Pyne Farms in Santaquin, and made delicious grape juice. Although Terry was the fruit farmer, Sue had a green thumb of her own. She grew beautiful flowers and had quite the talent for growing heirloom tomatoes. Each summer her dining room table would be covered in every shape, color, and variety of tomato imaginable. Sue had a great sense of humor, and was always able to make you laugh. She cracked jokes up until the end, and even conspired to escape her hospice bed to the front porch of her home. She was dear to all who knew her. She loved with her whole heart and would do anything at any time to help the ones she loved. She was the most beautiful, loyal and loving woman and will be dearly missed. Sue is survived by her husband Terry Pyne and six children: Mike (Kristin) Pyne of Midvale, Utah; Adrienne (Dallas) Young of Lindon, Utah; Greg (Melissa) Pyne of Johns Creek, Georgia; Kent (Mandee) Pyne of Payson, Utah; Kelly (Cardon) Webb of Holladay, Utah; and Cameron Pyne of Portland, Oregon. She had 12 grandchildren who all adored her, and had one more on the way who she dearly hoped to meet (Daniel, Alex, Sawyer, Hudson, Scarlett, Violet, Kenton, Nyles, Liam, Elliot, Koos, and Cree, and Parker). She is survived by six of her siblings: Victor Oldroyd, Mark Oldroyd, Hannah Jorgensen, Nancy Kowallis, Allen Oldroyd and Robert Oldroyd. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Esther Denkers. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2017, at Lakeview 5th Ward Chapel at 450 W. 1800 S., Orem, UT, at noon. There will be a viewing Wednesday, July 26th from 6-8 pm at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary at 495 S. State St., Orem, UT, and on July 27th from 11:00-11:45 am at the church prior to the service.
