University, Book 10, page 286. ~ ~ ~ ~ He reached 105 years old in October 2008. ~ ~ ~ ~ BYH graduate of 1923 who also graduated from BYU in 1932 honored for his longtime service to the University. A student once tearfully approached Karl A. Miller with news that he was quitting school, lacking the funds to pay for it. Miller, who was overseeing buildings and grounds at Brigham Young University at the time, would not hear of it. I said, go home and get your working clothes on and come with me right now. I am going to give you enough work that you are going to be able to pay your bills, if you are not afraid to work, Miller said. The same student came to Miller years later with happier news: he had received his doctoral degree and been invited to join the faculty at BYU. Miller has spent his life watching and helping the University literally grow from the ground up, and just days before his 100th birthday on Oct. 3, 2003, Miller was honored for his service to the University in front of thousands of people at LaVell Edwards Stadium prior to the BYU football game against Air Force. An old photo in a book Miller wrote titled History of Buildings and Grounds, Brigham Young University shows him as a kindergartner standing in front of the vacant land where the Karl G. Maeser Building -- the first permanent building on the BYU upper campus -- was to be built. In fact, Miller was named after former BYU President Maeser. During his 40-year career at BYU, Miller worked as an assistant superintendent and superintendent of buildings and grounds. He later worked supervising the University heating plant and mechanical shop. His home was located on campus for 23 years. Millers first job related to BYU was cleaning chalk erasers during the fifth grade for 50 cents per week. In sixth grade, he did custodial work. He graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1923 and received his bachelors degree from BYU in 1932. Karl Miller was chosen because we try to find people that have given a great contribution to BYU and that add intrigue, and he certainly does both, said Brian Santiago, BYU associate athletic director over operations. He is 100 years old, still going strong, has watched BYU basically be built since he was a little child and done numerous things to improve the university and the campus. Miller has a plentiful supply of memories regarding his lifelong relationship with BYU. But it is the hundreds of students who worked for him caring for BYU buildings and grounds that make up Millers favorite recollections. Babbitt, Provo Daily Herald.] PROVO, UTAH - Described as similar to a gigantic family reunion, alumni of Brigham Young University High School, known as BY High, gathered for a three-day combined class reunion recently. Among the more than 600 in attendance were students from the Class of 1923, (Karl Miller, age 93), to the Class of 1968, when the Church-owned high school was closed. The high school started as the Timpanogos Branch of the University of Deseret in 1870. In 1875, it was reorganized as part of the Brigham Young Academy and moved 17 years later in 1892 to 500 North and University Avenue in Provo. Even as late as 1920, BYU enrolled many more students at the elementary and secondary levels than it did in its collegiate courses. The high school provided education majors at BYU a place to do their student teaching. Another combined class reunion is planned for the summer of 2000. [Published in the LDS Church News, Saturday, November 4, 1995.] ~~ At 101, Karl A. Miller is the oldest recipient of the BYU Emeriti Alumni Association Special Recognition Award. He wrote a 365-page book, History of Buildings and Grounds, Brigham Young University, after 50 years in that department. [11 March 2005] ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Karl Albert Miller, age 105, died December 14, 2008, from causes incident to age, as you may guess. He was born in Provo, Utah, October 3, 1903 to Albert Miller (Brigham Young Academy's first professional musician) and Elsa Miller. Karl attended BYU schools from kindergarten through a Bachelor's Degree and nearly completed his Master's. He was on the BYU 1928 livestock judging team with Ezra Taft Benson. He began working for BYU when he was in the fifth grade, and later worked professionally in the Buildings and Grounds Department for forty years (eight of those years as superintendent). He considered providing students with employment and encouragement while they were completing college degrees to be one of his important missions in life. He managed to keep the buildings clean and warm during the depression and through a coal strike. Karl was present when Joseph F. Smith placed the cornerstone and time capsule in the Maeser Building at BYU, and he resolved a tragic situation, during a 1975 centennial celebration, when he opened the capsule with an old fashioned can opener. For many years, Karl ran generators to provide electricity at Aspen Grove for the annual Timp Hike Program. He donated his time to install the first sprinkler system at Provo LDS Tabernacle, was on the selection committee for the girls' camp at MIA Shalom, and supervised the building of the first cabins there. He was active in the LDS Church serving in bishoprics, on a high council for 15 years, and in the Provo Temple. While in high school, Karl rang the Y bell for class changes. In 1954, he supervised the repair work of the bell after it cracked when it was improperly rung. Karl felt highly honored when he was asked to "Light The Y" at a BYU football game on September 23, 2003, when the BYU Class of 1949 honored him in October 2004, and when he was presented a BYU Emeriti Alumni Association Award in 2005. He was an avid BYU sports fan! Karl enjoyed attending six annual centenarian celebrations hosted by three different governors of Utah. On June 24, 1931 Karl married Frances Augusta Crocheron in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and they were married two weeks short of sixty-nine years when Frances died. They are the parents of three sons: Reed (Opal), Grant (Judy), and Glen (Geri). They raised two nieces who were considered their daughters: Joyce Weight and Evelyn (Richard) Dalebout. Erickson, Jr. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: E. KATHERINE MILLER ERICKSON. E. Katherine Erickson, 93, formerly of Idaho Falls, passed away September 18, 2022, at Caring Hearts Assisted Living in Pocatello, ID. Katherine was born February 9, 1929, in Provo, Utah, to William L. Miller and Elsie Katherine Sorensen Miller. She grew up and attended schools in Provo, Utah, graduating from BYU High School in the Class of 1947. She later graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Clothing and Textiles from Brigham Young University, a Master's Degree in Retailing from New York University, and a teaching certificate in Home Economics Education from the University of Utah. On May 24, 1957, she married Lawrence E. Erickson in the Salt Lake Temple. Katherine and Larry moved for several years due to his occupation, and eventually made their home in Idaho Falls, where Katherine raised her family and later worked in retail sales for over 30 years. Her influence as a mother guided her children to pursue education and lead happy families in creating a large and faithful posterity. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and taught the gospel for many years. She served as Relief Society and Primary Counselor, Visiting Teacher, Librarian, and loved serving at the Idaho Falls Humanitarian Center for three years. She enjoyed doing genealogy, taking care of her home and family, and music. She also was a skilled seamstress and taught sewing to her family and in Continuing Ed. Katherine is survived by her daughter, Anne (Robert) Gray of Wasilla, Alaska; daughter, Camille (Thomas) Clark of Pocatello, Idaho; daughter, Elizabeth (Emilio) Escalona of Pocatello, Idaho; son, David (Jeanine) Erickson of Phoenix, Arizona; brother, William L. Miller, Jr. of Kalamazoo, Michigan; sister-in-law, Carole Cannon of Salt Lake City, Utah; 19 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her great-granddaughter, Audrey Clark. Services will be held at 12 noon on Friday, September 23, 2022, at the Home Ranch Ward, 2051 S. Emerson in Idaho Falls, with Bishop Jeff Westfall officiating. Services will be broadcast live. The family will visit with friends from 11 to 11:45 a.m. prior to the services at the church. Millie was born January 4, 1927 in Provo, Utah to Elmer and Rosella Miller. She had four other siblings: Merline, Lowell, Dorothy and Anna Lou. Merline, Lowell and Dorothy proceeded Millie in death. Anna Lou, the youngest sibling, is still living in Texas. Millie enjoyed growing up in Utah. Her father was the Head of the Economics Department at Brigham Young University. Millie went to Brigham Young High School, where she graduated in the Class of 1945. She attended BYU as a Drama Major and also obtained a Teaching Certificate and graduated in 1949. After graduating, Millie taught school then became a "Stewardess" for United. There she met Vincent Mele and married, June 26, 1954. They had three children: Diana Leiter (Scott), Douglas Mele and Wendy Mele Stofa (Frank). She was lucky to have four grandchildren that she enjoyed and was very active in all of their lives. Christopher Leiter (Rachelle), Patrick Leiter (Amy), Lynsey Budge (Jake) and Nicholas Stofa. She also had eight Great- Grandchildren: Natalie, Rebecca, Kelsie, Julia, Avery, Brooklynn, Blake and Alice. After teaching and her time as a stewardess, Millie went into retail and loved selling makeup and perfume at the fine department stores of the day. She worked first in Denver and then finally made it out to Southern California which was always her dream. Millie ended up in Colorado in her later years and spent them in the sun at the Stroh Ranch Pool where she had many friends. Millie passed peacefully after 91 years! Class of 1943 ~ H. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Beth Milner Raynes, 83, died February 21, 2009 at her home in Provo, Utah surrounded by her loved ones. Beth was born to Arnel Seaton Milner and Pearl Hamblin Milner, August 29, 1925 in Sunnyside, Utah. She was raised in the Provo Manavu Ward and attended BY Elementary, BY High and graduated from Provo High School in 1943. After attending LDS Business College she taught briefly at BYU. She married her sweetheart, Lincoln Francis Raynes, on July 15, 1943 in the Manti Temple. Beth and Lincoln enjoyed over 65 wonderful years together. They raised their family in Oregon and Utah. She was a leader of Republic Women's clubs, PTA's, garden clubs and also organized 4-H groups. She was runner up as Oregon's Mother of Year. She loved dearly being a member of the Daughter of the Utah Pioneers and organized multiple camps. Sixteen of her ancestors walked across the plains as pioneers. From a young age, Beth's keen mind sought out great literature. This passion was shared with her children and those she taught. As a lifelong learner and after raising her children, she graduated from Oregon State University in Psychology, Cum Laude, at age 56. She loved all people. People she met were never strangers very long. She loved her BYU Cougars and never missed a game if possible. Above all else she loved her Heavenly Father and the Savior Jesus Christ. Her life radiated this love. As a master teacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ, she loved being the gospel doctrine teacher. She was a sought after public speaker and especially loved speaking to youth groups throughout the western states. Besides Relief Society President in multiple wards, she also worked with Scouting and Young Women, including serving as ward and stake Young Women's President. She loved developing Girl's Camp. She felt her experience with her husband as a "Called and Set Apart" couple missionary was her second and third honeymoon. She was a valiant, dedicated and effective missionary in the Scotland Edinburgh and Jackson Mississippi missions. She loved and inspired the young missionaries, loved working with investigators and loved bearing her testimony of Jesus Christ and the restored gospel. She is survived by her husband, and children, Marybeth Raynes, Salt Lake City, Utah; Joseph (Alice) Raynes, Orem, Utah; Rebecca (Charlie) Chenoweth, Juneau, Alaska; Rosemarie (Grant) Garner, Albany, Oregon; Pearl (Brent) Hart, Riverton, Utah; Libby (Phil) McShinsky, Draper, Utah. She has 37 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two young children Ronald Lee and Sandra Dawn Raynes. She is survived by her sister, Lou (Glen) Slagowski [BYH Class of 1940?], Provo, Utah. Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb 28, 2009 at the Rock Canyon LDS Chapel, 2445 N. 650 E., Provo. Interment, Payson City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested gifts to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund.
