Thespians, Band, Photography Club, Childrens Theatre. ~ ~ ~ ~ Also: Jon Katzenbach, 2240 Catesbys Bluff, Seabrook Island, SC 29455-6037 (843) 243-9312 ~ ~ ~ ~ Jon Katzenbach, Senior Partner, Katzenbach Partners LCC, New York, New York. Teams work when they are created for the right reasons, and when they are created in the right way. The organization that I think does the best job of meeting these requirements is the U.S. Marine Corps. Most people think of the USMC as a command-and-control organization. But when they put a team together, it is in the right place for the right reasons. The corps is extremely disciplined about assessing whether it really needs a team for the task at hand. The notion that a team is always better is misleading, yet all too often, that is the path that managers choose. The critical decision for any manager or leader who wants to get higher performance from a small group of people is determining whether the group should try to work as a team, or whether they should be satisfied with what I call "single-leader unit" discipline. Single-leader units are intrinsically faster and more efficient than teams. Tasks are more clearly defined by one leader, and members work on their own much of the time. Most organizations proliferate with groups that call themselves teams but are not. It is too common for single-leader units to be labeled as teams, and it is disturbing how many managers and leaders assume that being a team is what a group effort is all about. That is a confusing, frustrating, and costly assumption. And it causes big problems in the workplace. If a group tries to become a team when the performance challenge requires a single-leader approach, performance and morale suffer. The opposite is equally true. In fact, both miscues produce the dreaded "compromise-unit syndrome": weak leadership, low levels of commitment, wasted time, and poor performance results. Jon Katzenbach (jon.katzenbach@katzenbach.com) is a senior partner at Katzenbach Partners LLC, a New York-based firm that specializes in leadership, team, workforce, and organization performance. He has written Peak Performance: Aligning the Hearts and Minds of Your Employees (Harvard Business School Press, 2000); Teams at the Top: Unleashing the Potential of Both Teams and Individual Leaders (Harvard Business School Press, 1998); The Wisdom of Teams: Creating the High-Performance Organization (with coauthor Douglas Smith) (Harper Business, 1994); and Real Change Leaders: How You Can Create Growth and High Performance at Your Company (with the RCL team, Frederick Beckett, et al.) Ellen Elaine Keeler Thompson, age 84, of Orem, graduated from life and joined her sweetheart of 60 years on Saturday, December 8, 2018. Ellen was born on May 1, 1934, in Provo, Utah, to Daniel M. and Virginia Christensen Keeler. She grew up in Provo, as a member of a close and loving family. Ellen’s parents were her adored mentors, and her siblings were her dear friends and greatest cheerleaders throughout her life. Ellen graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1952. She attended BYU, enjoying academics, performing with and directing the Cougarettes, and participating in student government. She served as student body vice president during her senior year. After graduation Ellen worked for NBC in New York City, where she met her sweetheart, Ivan Barry Thompson. They were sealed in the Manti Temple on 3 January 1958. Over the years, she and Barry made their home in New York City, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Tulsa and Orem. Ellen took her stewardships as a wife and a mother of eight children as her top priorities in life. Music was one of Ellen’s greatest joys from childhood until her last days. She performed in choirs and small groups, wrote music, and directed choirs. She was a talented writer, authoring a plethora of poems, scripts, church programs, and family history pieces. She will be remembered for the countless notes, letters and cards that she wrote to encourage friends and family members. Family history and temple work were lifetime passions. Ellen’s greatest attribute was her compassion for those in need, and desire to reach out in friendliness and kindness to people wherever she went. She collected friends everywhere she lived and served, and worked to keep those connections over the years. She was a joyful minister to those who struggled. Ellen was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her many church callings focused on music, the Relief Society, and various teaching assignments. She embraced her role as a visiting teacher. With her sweetheart she served as a temple ordinance worker, an MTC service missionary, and a family history consultant. She enjoyed their time working with the BYU Asian Ward. Ellen and Barry served two service missions together--in La Paz, Bolivia and Toronto, Canada. Ellen is survived by her eight children: Douglas (Michele), Kathleen (Todd Skinner), Bradford (Tami), Ginny (Scott Smith), David (Karin), Jonathan (Keeko), Margaret (Steve Willis), and Martha (Michael Johnson); twenty-four grandchildren, almost nine great-grandchildren. A special thanks to the diligence and kindness of Sissy and the caregivers at Cove Point and Brighton Hospice in caring for Mom in her last weeks. We appreciate friends in the Suncrest 5th Ward for their love and watchful care. She really treasured her associations with ward members and everyone she connected with on her missions and callings. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 2 p.m. in the Suncrest 5th Ward Chapel, 140 North 400 West, Orem, Utah. A viewing for friends and family will be held just prior to the service 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the chapel. Burial will be in the Provo City Cemetery. Brent Keeler

Class of 1973. Brent Keeler. BYU AA University Studies 1975. His parents: Joseph Jensen Keeler and Virginia Bowles Keeler. Joseph and Virginia had six children. Five daughters: Kathleen Keeler [BYH Class of 1954] (Floyd) Murphy, Mary Anne Keeler [BYH Class of 1957] (Boyd) Jolley, Marie Keeler [BYH Class of 1961~H] (Dale) Blanchard, Claudia Keeler [BYH Class of 1964] (Richard) Pickering, Janice Keeler [BYH Class of 1968] (Boyd) Butler; and one son: George Brent Keeler [BYH Class of 1973]. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: George Brent Keeler, 1955 – 2022. George Brent Keeler was born January 22, 1955 to Virginia Bowles Keeler and Joseph Jensen Keeler (Jay). He was welcomed as a boy not only by parents, but by five older sisters. Brent’s first name George, was given to honor “Uncle” George Fitzroy, a fast friend and mentor to Jay. Brent attended Joaquin Elementary for kindergarten, then Brighan Young Laboratory School, Farrer Junior High, and Provo High School. Subsequently, he completed two years at BYU. Brent was passionate about railroads and everything RR related, but his love for the US National Parks continued throughout his life. We sisters have always believed that had his circumstances been different, he would have been a career park ranger instead of long-term caregiver. He played the French horn and played in bands through high school, then under Dr. Ralph Laycock in the university band. He also sang with the Mormon Youth Chorus for several years. A large collection of recordings testify to his love of music. Brent was his father’s companion on dozens of Saturday trips to prowl around mining ghost towns. Then when his father could no longer drive, Brent became the driver and took his dad wherever he needed to go. This occupation expanded to caregiver as his parents aged, then as sole caregiver for his mother. Brent was preceded in death by sister, Janice Keeler Butler, and survived by sisters Kathleen Keeler Murphy, Mary Anne Keeler Jolley, Catherine Marie Keeler Blanchard and Claudia Keeler Pickering.
