Becky and David Thomas

Class of 1974. Rebecca Brown. Members of this class were in the BY elementary school's sixth grade in 1968. ~ ~ ~ ~ OBITUARY: Our beautiful Emma Rebecca Brown Thomas, 47, beloved wife, mother, daughter, and sister passed away unexpectedly at home Thursday, March 4, in Provo, Utah. Becky was a wonderful friend and confidant to her family and many, many friends. She loved readily and was beloved by all those who knew her. With her passing, many have lost their best friend. Becky was born April 23, 1956 in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, the eldest child of Thomas and Sheila Brown. She was educated in Provo, as well as in Belgium while her father served as a mission president, and at Brigham Young University where she earned a B.A. in French and a J.D. at BYU Law School. She was appointed as the Chair of the Work Force Labor Board by the Governor of the State of Utah. She met David Boyd Thomas while they were both attending Brigham Young University. They were married in the Provo Utah Temple on April 22, 1977. What started as a great love story grew into an incredible partnership. They truly appreciated each other and were devoted to one another. The greatest moments of joy in their marriage came with the addition of each of their three daughters. To capture Becky's life in a few words is impossible. She opened her heart and her home to all ages. She made her children's friends feel wonderful and welcome. She offered her extended family moments of fun, thoughtfulness, and great food. And to each friend, she became that special person who can lift and comfort. Becky was tireless in her devotion to her girls, interested in all aspects of their lives, acting as both a mother and best friend. She was a superb cook, and talented gardener, and a voracious reader. She was always ready to help feed the mind and the body. Becky was a lifelong member of the LDS Church. She served as president of the Young Women, Primary, and Relief Society organizations, gospel doctrine teacher, and bishop's wife. Becky is survived by her loving husband, David, her precious daughters Emma, Alexandra, and Hannah; her parents Thomas H. and Sheila Brown; her brothers and sisters John (Jolie) Brown, Alison (Eben Hewitt) Brown, Elizabeth Brown, Thomas (Penny) Brown, and Michael (Sheri) Brown. She was a favorite aunt to many nieces and nephews and a beloved sister-in-law to David's brothers and sisters. She was preceded in death by an infant son, John Wilding Thomas. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at the Oak Hills Stake Center, Provo. Interment, East Lawn Memorial Hills. [Deseret News, Monday, March 8, 2004.]

Hugh B. and Zina Brown

Board of Trustees, 1958 to 1975. Hugh B. Brown. One of the most popular twentieth-century Mormon leaders, Hugh B. (for Brown) Brown was born in Salt Lake City on 24 October 1883, to Homer Manley and Lydia Jane Brown. He was fifteen when his family moved to southern Alberta. There he made a home for Zina Young Card, whom he married in 1908, and there the first six of their eight children were born. [One daughter, Carol Brown Bunker Sonntag, graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1947.] He went to England as a missionary, serving from 1904 to 1906, and briefly returned in 1917 as a major in charge of Canadian replacements in World War I. These experiences produced two classic stories, "Father, Are You There?" and "The Current Bush." Brown's Canadian vocations included stints as cowboy, farmer, soldier, businessman, lawyer, and head of the LDS Lethbridge Stake. Moving to Salt Lake City in 1927, Brown quickly became a successful lawyer and president of the LDS Granite Stake. He also formed a lifelong allegiance with the Democratic party, which led to an unsuccessful run for political office and an unpleasant term of service as first chairman of Utah's Liquor Control Commission from 1935 to 1937. A call to head the LDS British Mission came soon, the first of many full-time church positions which brought him admiration and influence, but never the affluence for which he also yearned. As LDS Servicemen's Coordinator from 1941 to 1945, he traveled extensively in North America and western Europe as de facto chief chaplain for the thousands of Mormons in American, British, and Commonwealth uniforms; anecdotes born of this experience punctuated his sermons and writings thereafter. Early in 1944 he was given an additional appointment to reactivate the British Mission. Intervals as a professor of religion at Brigham Young University (1946-1949), and with an Alberta oil prospecting firm (1949-1953), preceded his call, at age seventy, to be one of the LDS General Authorities - an Assistant to the Council of the Twelve. Thereafter he became a member of the Council of the Twelve in 1958, and Counselor to and then Second Counselor in the First Presidency in 1961, becoming First Counselor in 1963. His record of earlier service, his effective writings and sermons, and his long friendship and ideological affinity with LDS Church President David O. McKay probably accounted for his rapid advancement in the church hierarchy. McKay's failing health and his own policy differences within the church leadership later weakened Brown's influence, though his popularity remained great. Following McKay's death in 1970, he served in the Council of the Twelve until his own death, two years after Zina's, on 2 December 1975.
