BYU~OHS makes plans to award high school diplomas

When Brigham Young University High School [BYUHS] was closed in May of 1968, classroom-learning-based high school diplomas were granted by BYU for the last time.

For many years after that, BYU Continuing Education offered online and home-study high school and middle school courses through BYU Independent Study, but they did not offer high school diplomas.

Students around the world took these Independent Study courses to supplement their course options while enrolled in other diploma granting schools.

In 2018, BYU formed a team within the Division of Continuing Education to consider the merits of offering a diploma for completion of a more comprehensive high school program.

This resulted in a proposal to the BYU administration in 2019, and ultimately to the Church Board of Education, which approved their proposal in January 2020.

In August 2020, they will launch their pilot year of the school with about 40 ninth-grade students from all over the country and one from Canada. They have had more than 500 inquiries from around the world, however they intend to grow slowly.

After a hiatus of 56 years, high school students will once again be able to receive a high school diploma in May of 2024, and it will come from BYU~Online High School [BYU~OHS].
